An emoticon is a sideways face that conveys emotion.
Ones that are used by most people:
:-) Smiley
:) Smiley
;-) Winking smiley
:-o Shock
:-( Sad
:( Sad
There are others, but they aren't in as widespread use.
Mostly I use these in email and chat between friends. I never use them in formal emails to people like professors unless they use them with me first. I do have a few teachers who will use them.
I've seen lots of Japanese faces, which are much more creative and actually look like Japanese cartoon faces. ;-)

Hi Jay.
You might know that Japanese emoticon is different from the other countries. They are not sideways face.
(^-^) smile
(T-T) cry
(>_<) こまった
(^-^)Y ピースサイン
q(^-^)p がんばるぞ、かな
(^o^; あせっ
When I saw the sideway-face emoticon for the first time, I did not recognize it was a face. Isn't it interesting?
