English 101:Are you coming or going? come vs go

I've just begun to notice the difference between Japanese and English in the use of 'come' and 'go' in some sentences. Have I got the hang of it?

a: Where shall we meet?
b: I'll *come* to your house.

Can you find any better examples in English and Japanese to make it clearer?

It's difficult to me.
But,

Can you COME to my party tomorrow?
Sorry, I can't COME....

...行く

Are they correct?
I had a same question when I heard 'Can I come??' for the first time.
I asked my teacher why do you use 'can' as 'go'?, he said that it's a same mean. If you say 'Sorry I can't go', it's also correct!

I hope it helps you....
Hi,Robert

I think it as follows;

from here to somewhere ⇒ go
from somewhere to here ⇒ come

a: Where shall we meet?
b: I'll *come* to your house. ⇒"go" is better,we usually use.

though it might depend on the situation...
ゆぅみんさん > that's a good way to think of it in English.

If the person you are talking to is here, use go.
If the person you are talking to is there, use come.
If the person you are talking to is *going to* be there, use come.
If the person you are talking to is *going to* be here, use go.

Face-to-face:
Shall I go to your house now?
Shall I come to your house later? (The person will have arrived there by then)
On the phone:
Shall I come to your house?
When you get here, shall I go back to work? (The person will have arrived here by then)

How do these conversations sound in Japanese? Would you use 行くor来る?
I'ts time to dinner.

I'm coming! ---

I'm going! ---

子:(母に)I'm coming!
子:(友達に)I'm going! 行く!

Does that work ok?
There is a similar topic "take vs bring." This topic is imagined kind of differently
between English and Japanese.
 話し手:you
聞き手:the person to whom you are talking

In English the position of the person to whom you are talking is important (the basis).
●come
You approach someone to whom you are talking.
●go
You leave someone to whom you are talking.

In Japanese your position is important (the basis).
You move from somewhere to here.
●行く
You move from here(somewhere) to somewhere.

If I translate these conversations from English to Japanese, they will look like
the below sentences.

【Face-to-face】
Shall I go to your house now?
 I(話し手) here ⇒ your house(somewhere)

Shall I come to your house later?
(The person will have arrived there by then)
 I(話し手) somewhere ⇒ your house(somewhere)

【On the phone】
Shall I come to your house?
 I(話し手) here ⇒ your house(somewhere)

When you get here, shall I go back to work?
(The person will have arrived here by then)
 I(話し手) here ⇒ work(somewhere)
Hi,everyone,

My considering is almost same as ふみねえ.

Robert,
We basically use "come" as "来る" or "戻る(帰る)"(return or come back to the original place) from somewhere, and
"go" as "行く" to somewhere.

*Face-to-face:

Shall I go to your house now? =as two persons(you & me) talk it at somewhere far from my house.

Shall I come to your house later? (The person will have arrived there by then) =as two persons(you & me) talk it at my house(here).

*On the phone:

Shall I come to your house? ⇒in Japanese way,"go" is
better because there are distance between two persons.

When you get here, shall I go back to work? (The person will have arrived here by then) ⇒ok

子:(母に)I'm coming!行きます!= come back to home (家に)帰ります。

子:(友達に)I'm going! 行く!

In this case I think it's Ok.
An idiomatic way to say that you are confused:

"I don't know if I am coming or going."

This seems to be particularly meaningful in this discussion thread! ;-)
