Thierry Henry joins New York Red Bulls


SECAUCUS, New Jersey (AP) ― France striker Thierry Henry joined the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday on a "multi-year" deal.
The 32-year-old former Arsenal and Barcelona player is the Major League Soccer side's second designated player.

"Some people might think I am going to go there for vacation <emdash /> I do actually go there for vacation <emdash /> but it won't be for vacation this time," Henry said in a video interview on the club website. "I'm a competitor and I don't like to lose. I am not going to say we are going to win every single game or we are going to win everything."

Henry was released by Barcelona last month after scoring just four goals last season <emdash /> his third at the Spanish champions.

"This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life," Henry said.

Henry is set to make his Red Bulls debut on July 22 in a friendly against Premier League club Tottenham.

"Thierry is not only a world class player who will undoubtedly improve our squad, but he has shown most importantly throughout his career that he is a winner," said Erik Soler, general Manager and sporting director of the Red Bulls. "He has made it clear to us that he is committed in the short and long term to help in our vision of making our organization the premium franchise in Major League Soccer."

Henry will be introduced at a press conference on Thursday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

With France, Henry won the World Cup in 1998 and the 2000 European Championship, but sparked outrage last year when his handball during a playoff match helped to deny Ireland a spot at this year's World Cup.

At the finals in South Africa, France went out at the group stage after the team was beset by a player protest.

Henry guided Arsenal to the Premier League title in both 2002 and 2004 before leaving in 2007 to join Barcelona, where he won six trophies in 2009 <emdash /> the Champions League, the Spanish league, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Supercup, the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In Wednesday's announcement, the team says that Henry will make his debut on July 22 in an exhibition against Premier League club Tottenham.

Henry - a member of the France World Cup squad that returned home in disgrace from South Africa - has joined the MLS side on a "multi-year contract" in one of the biggest coups for the league in its history.

"This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life," Henry said. "It is an honour to play for the New York Red Bulls. I am fully aware of the team's history and my sole goal during my time here is to help win the club its first championship. Knowing Red Bull's significant commitment to soccer locally and internationally, I am confident that my team-mates and I will succeed."

The 32-year-old is France's all-time record goalscorer having scored 51 times for les Bleus and he also broke Ian Wright's record for Arsenal, scoring 226 goals between 1999 and 2007 as he cemented his reputation as one of the finest players in world football.

Henry was an integral member of the Arsenal side that went the season unbeaten in 2003-04 and won two league titles and three FA Cups during his time in North London. He was also named Footballer of the Year on three separate occasions.

Henry joined Barcelona in the summer of 2007 and helped the club secure the treble in 2009 when they defeated Manchester United in the final of the Champions League, scoring 25 goals in all competitions for the Catalans. However, last season he struggled to win a place in Pep Guardiola's side, making just 15 league starts as Barca retained the Spanish league title.

"We are thrilled that Thierry has decided to come to New York to help the Red Bulls compete for championships this year and for years to come. Henry now opens a new chapter in his career by moving to MLS and will be presented as a Red Bulls player in a press conference on July 15. When his international transfer certificate is safely received, Henry will be able to make his debut against Arsenal's bitter rivals, Tottenham, in a friendly fixture on July 22.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has completed his long awaited move from Barcelona to the New York Red Bulls on a "multi-year contract" - and will make his debut against old rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Henry, 32, had been linked with a switch to the Major League Soccer outfit all last season after making just 15 La Liga starts for Barca last season.

He will be presented at a press conference tomorrow and is expected to make his first appearance for his new side in a friendly against Spurs at the Red Bull Arena on July 22.

The World Cup and European Championship winning centre forward joins as the Red Bulls' second designated player, alongside former Aston Villa hit man Juan Pablo Angel. He is expected to use his experience with sides including Monaco and Juventus to help continue the development of the sport in North America.

Speaking to his new club's official website, Henry couldn't wait to get started in the United States. He said: “This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life.

“It is an honour to play for the New York Red Bulls. I am fully aware of the team’s history and my sole goal during my time here is to help win the club its first championship.

"Knowing Red Bull’s significant commitment to soccer locally and internationally, I am confident that my team-mates and I will succeed.”

Henry was also quick to blast critics who said he has only followed David Beckham's path to the division to seek a bumper pay cheque at the end of his career.

He responded: "Some people are going to say I've only gone here for the cash and, well, I do go here for vacation but it won't be a vacation this time.

"I am a competitor and don't like to lose. I'm not going to say we're going to win every single game or win everything. I'm a competitor and even in training, or with some friends when I play in the park I just want to win.

"I try to do everything in my power to win and that's all I can say."

He is Arsenal’s all-time leading goal-scorer, having netted 226 times between 1999-2007, and spent the past three seasons at Barcelona, the first two of which were successful.

Last season, however, was disappointing and he was widely expected to leave the club.

Henry was heavily criticised for handling the ball in the build up to William Gallas’s winning goal in a World Cup play-off against Ireland, which led France into an ultimately embarrassing finals campaign in South Africa.

He has scored a record 51 goals from France.
