Wow, this is my first time starting a topic in a community! I hope I am doing it correctly...
Hi, everybody! My name is Dara, nice to meet you all!
I will be going to Osaka next year to study for one year. I'm going to study at 大阪府立大学 which is pretty far from the city. I'm thinking about renting an apartment in the city area (even though it'd take about one hour to travel to the university), but I was wondering if it is actually possible to rent an apartment for one year only? I heard that real estate agents prefer two year contract only. Is this true?
Also, will they sell it more expensive to me because I am a foreigner?
I'm also wondering which area is convenient and cheap? I was thinking Shinsaibashi because that seems like it's surrounded by many shops and so it's very convenient, but it seems expensive? Maybe?
If anybody is able to help me with any of these questions, please do! Thank you so much!
Try the apt listing on http://www.gaijinpot.com This will at least get you started. Doesn't the university have dorm rooms? Would you be willing to share an apt with others?
Keep in mind, that you'll be living in a shoebox. I personally look at that is it'll take 5 min to clean, and I don't have to walk across the room to get a soda.
You'd be better off dealing with a realtor that caters to foreigners. If you're not American, you can also get a working holiday visa. This will allow you to work while going to school. Unfortunately, that sucks for me since they don't offer that to Americans.
Thank you for the reply, untmdsprt! Also, thanks very much for the website! It's great!
The university provides dorm rooms, but I very much prefer living in the city area and also around Japanese people. I don't want to be living with other foreigners, because then I would just communicate in English rather than Japanese. I want to know more about Japanese culture so it'd be cool to live near Japanese people as neighbours and stuff.
Oh no! I've heard apartments are not very spacious, but you made it sound really really confined. Ahhh! Sounds quite scary, actually!
Oh yay, I am not American but I am going to be on a student visa. I wonder if I could still get a working holiday visa? Hmmm...
Anyways, thanks very much for the information. I will keep this in mind!
I see your point in wanting to live with Japanese people. Personally I wouldn't want to live around Americans. I do that here, and am tired of it. I want fresh new faces!
Another thought is to find a family that is willing to have a student living with them. I'm sure everyone can use the extra money, and it would be a great way to practice your Japanese.
