Peter Choyke, M.D., Director of the Molecular Imaging Program in NCI's Center for Cancer Research, discusses a cancer therapy that he developed with his colleague Hisataka Kobayashi, M.D., Ph.D., called photoimmunotherapy. This therapy involves attaching a photosensitizer to an antibody that can selectively target cancer cells. Once in place, the photosensitizer/antibody complex can be activated with infrared light, essentially destroying the cancer cell, but leaving nearby normal cells unharmed.
