12 months ago, we set out to bring the sounds of late 80s-early 90s Madchester to the bright lights of Tokyo... and boy did we bring it!

6 huge parties down the line, and it's time to celebrate The First Birthday.

With a generous helping of our regular DJs, 3 live bands, a few big surprises, as well as some very special guests, The First Birthday promises to be a full-on trip.

Big news is that we've moved to TRUMP ROOM. Every party we had at Trump House was packed; freaky dancin' was obstructed, breathing space was limited and capacity was always exceeded! So... we've decided to go bigger! Trump Room has 3 floors, each of which will offer a different vibe at the The First Birthday.


---The Live/Indie Room---
On the 4th floor, we'll be playing host to some of our favorite live bands, followed by bags and bags of indie rock from Tokyo's most cosmic DJs and selectors. Expect to be taken on a Madchester musical journey... music made in, influenced by and copied from the UK's greatest scene. From Joy Division to James and The Stone Roses to The Smiths, you're sorted for indie rock n' roll here.

---The House Room---
The 5th floor promises classic club-bangers, with enough aciiiiiieeeeeeeeeed to take you trippin' back to the days of day-glo, baggy and avin' it! We're bringing you not one, but five special guest DJs, each spinning their take on the Madchester theme. Expect acid house, detroit house, chicago house, classic house, balearic house, rave, drum n' bass and Ha?ienda-esque chooooooooons. Big things!

---The Party Room---
Up on the 6th floor, we're going with an anything goes attitude... we don't even know what to expect, so we won't even try to explain!

THE BRIXTON ACADEMY
The Brixton Academy, under their moniker LOVE ACTION, have regularly DJ’d at CONTROL since we started. To celebrate The First Birthday, they’ll be gracing us with a full-on live performance!
The boys of The Brixton Academy are said to have a ‘90s hunger for indie Hacienda dance floor guitar rock’, with ‘dance inspired tunes that are strung around a Hooky inspired bass’. A perfect match for CONTROL? We certainly think so!

PLASTICZOOMS
Sho and his merry men are another band that’s been with us since the start, spinning at every CONTROL so far! We’ve managed to interrupt the recording of their new album and get them booked for The First Birthday.
If you’ve been lucky enough to see Plasticzooms live, you’ll immediately understand our desire to have them play at The First Birthday. Mysterious visuals accompany the dark tunes, whilst vocalist Sho mesmerizes the audience with his wail, reaching highs and lows that send shivers down your spine. All of this topped off with some of the tightest live music we’ve heard in years... Plasticzooms’ live extravaganza promises to shake the (Trump) Room.

SPIKE ISLAND (The Stone Roses tribute band)
Who needs them to reform when we've got Japan's very own Stone Roses?! Spike Island are an amazing tribute to everybody's favorite Madchester band. Named after The Roses' legendary gig at Spike Island, these boys sing and play like The Stone Roses at their peak! Spike Island vocalist has the voice and swagger of a young Ian Brown, whilst Mani, Reni and John Squire-alikes play music so perfect that you'd easily mistake it for the real 'Roses.
Do not miss this live performance, Spike Island very rarely play gigs anymore, and are making an extra special exception to play at The First Birthday... ‘the second coming’!


∇Guest DJ Introductions∇

DJ MAYURI (Metamorphose)
Simply put, Mayuri is massive in the techno scene. As organizer of Metamorphose Festival, she has booked and DJ’d alongside some of the world’s biggest dance acts, and is a regular at clubs across Japan and the throughout world!
However, it’s not all techno, it’s HOUSE too!
Mayuri spent most of the early 90s living in London, honing her DJ skills and building up a very, very impressive collection of House records! She’s dying to dust off her Acid vinyl and spin some classic 90’s tunes… a very special one-off set for CONTROL!

YONEHARA YASUMASA
When we first approached YONE to DJ at CONTROL, we had no idea that he was such an Acid-head! After hearing about the party, YONE said “Your party’s theme is so interesting! I have loved acid house since the 80s! I used to be called Ecstasy Boy in those days! Aciiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeddddd!” Upon hearing this, we snapped him right up! Rude not to really!
Expect a lively, acid-heavy set from Yone-chan, spinning the music that he loves and rarely has the chance to drop!

TOKYO DANDY
Dan Bailey, of Tokyo’s greatest fashion blog; tokyodandy.com, is making his second appearance at CONTROL. Hailing from The UK, his last set was full of party songs that shaped many of our youths'... a perfect combination of 80s/90s pop and rock that took us way back to simpler times! If that’s anything to go by, we’re in for a real treat at The First Birthday!

DUCK ROCK
Nobuhisa Yamamoto aka Duck Rock is our trusty resident-come-headline DJ with a Madchester musical knowledge that’d rival Tony Wilson’s. He has worked with, produced and remixed tracks for major bands and artists, and has been on the DJ scene since the original Madchester days.
Duck will be playing 2 sets at The First Birthday... an Indie set and a House set. We’re looking forward to again witnessing how he effortlessly switches styles and brings the crowd up with every mix he makes.

P.O.L. STYLE
DJ, producer and all-round top guy, P.O.L. has had his own productions and remixes released on labels such as Tiger Bass and Nightshifters, and he recently released a mix on Diplo’s Mad Decent label! He is also organizer of Laguna Bass and Numbers Tokyo... so P.O.L. knows a thing or two about parties!
But go further back, and you’ll find that P.O.L’s style comes from his early teenage years spent exploring rave and happy hardcore... looks like his set at The First Birthday could be a little bit mental!

TERRY (British Pavilion)
Head honcho of the long running British Pavilion events, and Tokyo’s very own king of rock & roll, Terry’s eccentric DJ sets offer a lesson in rock music! We’ve been trying to book Terry since our very first event, and we are delighted that he is finally joining us! Expect the finest in 80s and 90s UK rock and indie, with a few surprises thrown in their to keep the people dancing!

DIRK BITE (Kinfolk)
Founder of the legendary biker-punk bar Kinfolk in Nakameguro and regular on the Tokyo circuit. One of the most versatile DJ’s out there playing everything from Disco to Electro to Rock.
After seeing him play a scorching set of Jackin’ House and Acid bangers at Trump Room we knew he would fit our party perfectly with his vast collection of vinyl and flawless mixing skills.
