An official part of the ‘100 Years of Exchange: Brazil - Japan’ celebrations, the Grupo Bantus Capoeira Japão will be hosting their 2nd annual Capoeira Festival this month with Brazilian guest instructors from around the world.

The festival consists of workshops covering all aspects of the Brazilian art form capoeira; including Capoeira Angola, Contemporânea, Samba, Maculelê, and Acrobatics as well as music and instruments.


Guest instructors will be flying in from Brazil, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Two returning guests include instructors Claudinho and Rafael teaching in Singapore and Malaysia respectively. Making their debut in Japan will be instructors Grão and Lula teaching in Australia and Brazil respectively. Guest of honour, Mestre Pintor flying in from Brazil, brings his 40 years of capoeira knowledge and authority to supervise the festivities.

Workshops take place in the Kichijoji area from Monday October 27th to Saturday November 1st, including free night-time displays of capoeira on the streets during the week, and a Kids Workshop in the morning, adults workshop from midday, and free display from 2pm on Saturday.

The festival ends with a bang on Sunday November 2nd with the “Batizado & Troca de Cordas” grading ceremony, live samba, capoeira show, and a few other surprises. This event is free.

As well as the five Brazilian guest instructors, there will be many other guests coming from all over Japan.

The workshops and free Batizado event take place at Event Hall Musashino and Mitaka Yon Sho Elementary school. The workshop fee for visitors is 3000yen, no pre-registration is required. Just bring a bottle of water, sweat towel, and comfortable sports clothes.
