Hope everyone is well. Again, I have managed to get another movie: A love to hide. I was told it is a great story of love. Dir: Christian Faure, France, 2005, video 103 mins French with English subtitles
Paris 1942, and the French capital is under Nazi occupation. The Lavandier family owns a prosperous laundry and on the surface it seems that the clan is unified in a single purpose, but the truth is far darker. Jean, the heir to the business has a lover, Philippe, unbeknownst to his parents and brother, Jacques. When a family friend, Sara, turns up asking Jean for shelter he's fearful that the Gestapo will kill her and offers her a bed in Philippe's apartment. When Sara is offered a job in the laundry, for a brief time life is wonderful for the three unexpected friends, however the spectre of disaster looms large. It is only a matter of time before their life of happiness is cruelly snatched away as they become pawns in one of history's most shameful and brutal episodes. This emotionally powerful story is a perfect compliment to the documentary Paragraph 175 which dealt with gay persecution during the Nazi era. Handsomely produced and wonderfully acted, A Love to Hide is a nuanced French drama that is at times quite shocking and will generate strong reactions. (PT) Warning: Contains scenes which may distress some viewers
