Orissa Dance Academy, founded by Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, performs in Santa Cruz on October 28th and in the Bay Area on October 29th. The Odissi troupe features Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, leading Odissi dancers Aruna Mohanty and Manaranjan Pradhan (who has performed and taught in the Bay Area several times), an outstanding group of dancers, including a unique group of male Odissi dancers, and some of the finest Odissi musicians. Please see the bios below. While the dance will be a visual delight for the audience, the music will be haunting, in whole creating an aesthetically beautiful spellbinding experience. It is a program that dance lovers should not miss, since it is surely to be the best Odissi performance this year and possibly one of the best that the Bay Area has ever seen. ORISSA DANCE ACADEMY The Orissa Dance Academy was established in 1975 in the temple city of Bhubaneswar. The Academy conducts training classes both for Indian and foreign students. Members of the Orissa Dance Academy have performed in prestigious dance festivals in India and all over the world. They received rave reviews for their performance at the Kennedy Center, Washington DC. The Orissa Dance Academy organizes the 銭onark Dance & Music Festival?, 'Dhauli Mahotsav' and ?Kalinga Kala Utsav? to create cultural awareness. The Orissa Dance Academy has branches in Assam, Gujurat, Canada, Holland, and Southern California.
Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Guru Gangadhar Pradhan began his training in gotipua at the age of six. He completed his Natya Acharya course in Odissi from Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyala. Guru Pradhan received further training in Odissi under the able guidance of Guru Pankaj Charan Das, Guru Devprasad Das, Dr. Minati Mishra and Shri Dhirendra Nath Pattnaik. He mastered the delicate nuances and the subtleties of the Odissi dance form none other than Padma Bibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra. Guru Pradhan is a renowned Mardala player who accompanied Srimati Sanjukta Panigrahi for numerous programs. Guru Gangadhar Pradhan has traveled widely to all corners of the world and is the founder of Orissa Dance Academy and Konark Natya Mandap. He was a recipient of the State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1993 and the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998.
Aruna Mohanty Srimati Aruna Mohanty is the senior most teacher, performer, Member Secretary of the Orissa Dance Academy. Aruna has many awards to her credit, namely, Mahari Award 1997, Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award, Fellowship by the Government of India, and a prestigious award from the Utkal University, Orissa. Aruna has traveled extensively in Canada, Europe, USA, and South America and has rendered performances at the Festival Of India series and other programs of ICCR.
Manoranjan Pradhan Sri Manoranjan Pradhan is a senior teacher, performer, and treasurer of the Orissa Dance Academy. Sri Manoranjan has taught and performed in Canada, Mexico and the United States. He has also performed in Germany, Italy, Croatia and England.
Ramesh Chandra Jena Ramesh Chandra Jena received his formative training from the Orissa Dance Academy. He is the recipient of Senior National Scholarship from the Government of India. Currently he is a senior teacher and performer in Orissa Dance Academy. He has performed in South Africa, Germany, Italy, Croatia, England, and the US.
Madhusmita Mohanty Ms. Madhusmita Mohanty is a senior teacher and performer of the Orissa Dance Academy. She received the 鉄ingarmani? title conferred by Sur Singar Samsad,Mumbai and the 泥eba Prasad Dash Memorial Fellowship? for 1997-98 .She has performed in Germany, Italy, Croatia, England, and the US.
Yudhisthir Nayak Sri Yudhisthir Nayak began his career as a Gotipua dancer and then continued his training in Odissi from the Orissa Dance Academy. Sri Yudhisthir has performed extensively in India and abroad. He was a recipient of the Senior National Scholarship from the Government of India. He is currently a resident teacher at the Center For World Music in San Diego, California. Pabitra Kumar Pradhan He is one of the senior teachers and important members of the performing group of Orissa Dance Academy. Sri Pabitra received the Senior National Scholarship from the Government of India in 1996. He has performed widely in India and the 擢estival of India? in North Korea and the 的nternational Odissi Dance Festival? in the US.
Leema Bhol Ms. Leema Bhol is a member of the performing group of the Orissa Dance Academy. She was awarded the Senior National Scholarship by the Government of India. She has participated in major festivals in India and has performed in North Korea, USA, Germany, Italy, Croatia and England recently.
Shibani Patnaik Shibani Patnaik is a student and a member of the performing group of the Orissa Dance Academy. The Dance department at Stanford University invited Shibani to teach Odissi Dance for one quarter. She received the Asian American Performing Arts Award. The Orissa Society of Americas honored her with the 適alashree? award for her contribution to Odissi dance in North America.
MUSICIANS : BIJAYA KUMAR BARIK: Sri Bijaya Kumar Barik is an outstanding mardal player empanelled by AIR and Doordarshan, who has traveled all over the word with renowned dancers, accompanying in Odissi dance. RAMESH CHANDRA DAS: Sri Ramesh Chandra Das is a composer and solo violin player recognized by AIR and Doordarshan. He has traveled all over the country and abroad many times as a solo performer and as an accompanist in Odissi dance.
RABI SHANKAR PRADHAN: He is a noted sitar player of the present generation, an 羨? Grade approved artiste of A.I.R, D.D.K and has traveled major European countries and the USA.
SUKANTA KUNDU: Sukanta Kundu is one among the leading Odissi vocalist of Orissa. He has performed in many prestigious festivals in India and abroad. He is an approved artiste of Dept. of Culture, Govt. of Orissa, AIR, and Doordarshan. Productions
