Scheduled to screen in Bloomington, Illinois, on the eve of Veterans’ Day, ONLY THE BRAVE features such major stars as JASON SCOTT LEE and MARK DACASCOS and tells the story of the all-Nisei 100th/442nd Regiment’s historic rescue of the “Lost Battalion” during WWII.
It has been 60 years since the end of World War II. Yet how many know that one of its most decorated units was the all-Nisei 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team – comprised of Japanese-American volunteers (and one Korean-American volunteer)? And that while they were sacrificing their lives in Africa, Italy and France, many of their loved ones were forcibly detained in internment camps and prisons back home? ONLY THE BRAVE is a memorable new motion picture inspired by the real-life heroism of the men of the 100th/442nd Regiment.
On Thursday, November 10, the OCA-Central Illinois Chapter and The Castle Theater will present “An Evening with ONLY THE BRAVE” at The Castle Theater, 209 E. Washington, Bloomington, Illinois. Scheduled to attend the event are director and actor Lane Nishikawa, producer Eric Hayashi, and actors Yuji Okumoto, Jason Scott Lee (invited) and Mark Dacascos (invited). Veterans of the 100th/442nd Regiment will be honored at the event. Ticket price is $50 per person, and includes the Dessert & Tea Reception and admission to private screening A or B. The public is invited to attend. For ticket information, call event chair Wendy Wilber at (309) 261-4751.

Directed and written by Lane Nishikawa, ONLY THE BRAVE stars a world-renowned cast of Asian-American actors that includes Jason Scott Lee, Mark Dacascos, Oscar-nominee Pat Morita, Yuji Okumoto and Tamlyn Tomita.
Nishikawa, an award-winning playwright and performer, based the story on the actual experiences of his four Nisei uncles who served in the 100th/442nd and MIS (Military Intelligence Service) – as well as those of other veterans who shared their memories with him over the years.
Two months after the Pearl Harbor invasion on December 7 1941, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, permitting the U.S. military to uproot thousands of Japanese-Americans and ship them to interment camps. In February of 1943, the ban on Japanese in the military was lifted and the 100th Battalion 442nd Regimental Combat Team was formed. Containing Japanese-American volunteers (and one Korean-American volunteer), the 100th/442nd was sent to Europe. ONLY THE BRAVE captures the poignant personal stories of five members of the 100th/442nd during its most audacious campaign: the historic rescue of the “Lost Battalion” (from Texas) in France’s Vosges Mountains after earlier attempts by larger army units failed to break through enemy lines. Notably, this particular event is now regarded as one of the ten most significant battles of World War II.
During two years of combat, the incomparable courage of the 100th/442nd resulted in an unparalleled 21 Medals of Honor, 9486 Purple Hearts, 8 Presidential Citations, 53 Distinguished Service Crosses, 588 Silver Star and 5200 Bronze Star Medals – making it the most decorated unit of its size and length of service in American history.
Significant of the film’s impact on audiences, ONLY THE BRAVE has screened to packed houses in Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, and Stockton. Last month, the San Diego Asian Film Festival had to book a second screening when tickets to its originally-scheduled event sold out in advance.
ONLY THE BRAVE” has been endorsed by U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (a WWII veteran - and Medal of Honor recipient - who lost an arm while serving with the 100th/442nd), U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka, U.S. Congressman Ed Case, and such organizations as the 100th/442nd Veterans Associations of America, the Japanese American Citizens League, the Organization of Chinese Americans, the Japanese American National Museum and the Go For Broke Educational Foundation.
A Mission From Buddha Production, ONLY THE BRAVE was produced by Karen Criswell, Eric Hayashi, and Jay Koiwai. The film was funded in part by grants from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and donations from families of veterans who served in the 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team and the Military Intelligence Service – spearheaded by the National Japanese American Historical Society.
Proceeds from the Bloomington, Illinois event will benefit OCA–Central Illinois Chapter.
