Michael Cullen is widely recognized for his substantial contribution to Music & Sound Design under the guises of Mike Dred, The Kosmik Kommando, Chimera and The Universal Indicator - a joint project with Richard D James. He has only performed in Japan on three occasions, as part of a Rephlex Records Tour, back in 1998: Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo. Rough Guide publications ' The Rough Guide to Techno', described Mike as “The Jimi Hendrix of the 303” and “Full on Acid (Music) Genius”. His first DJ exploits were back n 1983 and since 1988 he has performed consistently all over the world. Mike was the first DJ / Producer to receive sponsorship from the Arts Council of Great Britain National Lottery program. Mike has well-established links to academia having gained an MSc with Distinction in Sound Design from The University of Edinburgh where he also lectured and provided important mentoring to post-graduate students in the final stages of their degrees. His works are often used for educational purposes and a selection is part of the prestigious Music Performance Research Centre (MPRC) collection at the Barbican Centre, London. UK. Mike was the first artist to sign to Rephlex records in the UK. He recorded many releases for the Belgian label R&S Records and continues with his own label Machine Codes, now in it’s 22nd year. His most recent LP released on 13th February 2013, is called LUNATIC SOUND DESIGNER. It is a project 10 years in the making.
