Rabih Mroue is a Lebanese prodigy who works ubiquitously across the borders of theater, visual art, fine art and music and triggers a storm in the global art community. Prior to the new production (world premiere) at Tokyo International Arts Festival in March 2007, Rabih visits Japan to express his aspiration for the new production.
What potential remains in arts in a country deeply traumatized by the civil war and in a society defined by a religious community? What the role of individuals? In Lebanon, there is a growing concern of reoccurrence of civil war after Israel's attack in the summer of 2006 and a series of assassination. An artist working in Beirut questions the meaning of continuing art expression in Lebanon. (in English with Japanese translation)
Rabih Mroue: Born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1967. Rabih works based in Beirut and actively performs at major arts festivals, theaters and museums over the world, attracting increasing attention globally. He performed "Biokhraphia" at Tokyo International Arts Festival 2004 to win rave reviews. A provocative multimedia performance almost to the limit of censorship, and exquisite humor relentlessly represents and destructs the faults and contradictions of Lebanese society that he belongs to and fiercely criticizes its fictitiousness made up by media and communities.
