Eng Ed 8655: Distinguished Lecturer Series (Seminar 1): Interlanguage Pragmatics 1 credit hour
This seminar will investigate how language learners perform and acquire speech acts such as requests, apologies and refusals in a second language. It will examine research in these areas and the application of this research to the teaching of pragmatic competence. Participants will have the opportunity to work with samples of learner language to investigate interlanguage pragmatics.

1. Research methods for investigating L2 pragmatic competence 2. Requesting in an L2. 3. Apologizing in an L2 4. Refusing in an L2 5. Interactional acts and impression management 6. The relationship between linguistic and pragmatic L2 development
