Thursday, November 11th!
Joshikai is a networking group for Japanese women and women with a connection to Japan. On Thursday, November 11th, we'll meet in Japantown for a happy hour, followed by a screening of a short film by a local Japanese American director.
We'll meet from 6 to 8 pm at O! Izakaya in Japantown for networking and girl talk. Beer is $5 and cocktails start from $6. As always, this is a great opportunity to practice your language skills (Japanese and English) and connect with women who have similar interests.
At 8 pm, we will head to Viz Cinema for a screening of "The Virtues of Corned Beef Hash," a new film that explores the friendship between a Japanese American veteran and a half-Japanese journalist. The 20-minute film was filmed entirely in San Francisco's Japantown, by a local cast and crew. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director, and a reception with cake, food and wine, open to all who attend the screening. The event is free, with a $10 suggested donation; some proceeds will benefit the non-profit Japanese American community newspaper, the Nichi Bei Weekly.

次回の女子会は11月11日にジャパンタウンの O！Izakayaで行います。ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、こちらジャパンタウンの居酒屋です。特にハッピーアワーはないそうですが、ビールは5ドル、ワイン、カクテルは６ドルから、お食事も充実しているそうです。女性ならどなたでも大歓迎です。 みんなでリラックスしながらおしゃべり、情報交換、ネットワークをしましょう。もちろんお友達も誘ってどしどしお越し下さい。11月の会は、一応午後6時から8時までとさせていただきます。その後8時からショート・フィルム「The Virtues of Corned Beef Hash」を見る会を行います。
ショート・フィルム「The Virtues of Corned Beef Hash」について
サンフランシスコのジャパンタウンを舞台とし、87歳の日系退役軍人ジョー・ヨカイと日本人ハーフのジャーナリスト、ケビン・オハラとの友情を描いたショートフィルムです。上映時間は約２０分で、映画上映後に軽食付きのレセプションがあります。こちらはどなたでも参加可能です。こちらは入場料無料だそうですが、寄付として10ドルをお願いしているとの事です。寄付金の一部は日米ウィークリーに寄付されるそうです。
日米ウィークリーについて
「日米ウィークリー」は第二次世界大戦が終わった翌年の1946年、「日米時事」としてサンフランシスコで設立。その後名称を「日米タイムス」に変更し、日系人向けの新聞として戦中に米政府によって日系人強制収容所に監禁され、財産を奪われた在米日本人コミュニティー復興に寄与しました。昨年9月に経営難により廃刊、その後NPO団体「日米ウイークリー」として日系コミュニティーの今を報道し続けています。
O! Izakayaだけ、または映画だけ参加、どちらもOKです。映画はどなたでも参加可能ですので、男性の方も是非どうぞ。
