EVENTS / SCHEDULE 2 INsight CONVERSATIONS - THE PARAMOUNT THEATER
NPR correspondent Alex Chadwick will engage our three legacy photographers in conversations about their lives and careers behind the camera. These intimate one-on-one interviews will take place each night in the historic Paramount Theater accompanied by projections of the artists work onto a giant screen behind the stage.
Mary Ellen Mark (Thu, June 12, 7-9pm) 2 Joel-Peter Witkin (Fri, June 13, 4-6pm) 2 James Nachtwey (Sat, June 14, 4-6pm) 2 2 TREES Widely regarded as the world's premier photographer of whales, Flip Nicklin's majestic undersea images will be suspended high in the trees along Charlottesville's outdoor pedestrian mall. On Wednesday, June 11th, Flip will make a special Festival preview presentation at the Paramount Theater (June 11, 7-9pm). 2 PAGES Every evening experience the year's best images from international newspapers and magazines, including National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times, Paris Match, The New Yorker, Smithsonian, Time, and more than fifty others. After dark, these images will light up in storefront windows and at a large outdoor screen at the center of the Downtown Mall. 2 BOOKS LOOK3 celebrates photography publishing by presenting 50 choice books from 2007 and 2008. Curators Leah Ben-David Val and Darius Himes pay tribute to innovative collaborations between photographers and publishers, presenting an intriguing sampling of the enormously diverse titles being produced today. Selections include works by photographers Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, Richard Misrach, Daido Moriyama, Luigi Ghirri, Boris Mikhailov, Alex Webb, and many more, with publishers Steidl, Nazraeli, Phaidon, Hatje Cantz, Aperture, Fraenkel Gallery, and others. Volumes are displayed for easy handling and inspection to inspire both seasoned and aspiring bookmakers. 2 YOURSPACE In YourSpace, Festival attendees can print, display, and project their own work for others to see. This creative and collaborative exhibit is at the heart of the LOOK3 mission to share and inspire. Canon will be on-site to make prints from digital files and Apple technicians will be available to help guests build digital slideshows for projection. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this unique exhibit. 2 MASTERS Hear great stories and see outstanding images in the historic Paramount Theater. This year we are delighted to present short talks by Gerd Ludwig, Nubar Alexanian & Jeff Jacobson, Brenda Ann Kenneally, Lynn Johnson, Chris Boot, Maggie Steber, and Sam Abell, who will discuss and show their latest projects. 2 LOOK3 THEATER New for 2008, multimedia projects from around the world will be shown on a large screen in an intimate setting. This dynamic 3-hour program will cycle twice daily, and select artists will be on hand to discuss their work. 2 SCREENINGS VINEGAR HILL THEATER (Ticketed Event - Not included in Festival Pass) Alexander: Extraordinary Child, a premiere film by Martin Bell Twins, by Martin Bell and Mary Ellen Mark; War Photographer, a film about James Nachtwey Joel-Peter Witkin Film, a 30 minute preview of a yet to be released film about Joel-Peter Witkin by director Catherine Pex 2 SHOTS, IX WAREHOUSE 2 Friday, June 13th Revel in amazing photography in this unique setting - an abandoned warehouse transformed by images and audience. A dynamic cross-section of all types of work from internationally recognized photographers, these projections are followed by an all night dance party: Screening 8:30 - 10pm Party 10pm - 2am.
