The Student Center for Women invites the LaGuardia Community to attend a workshop tomorrow, Thursday, October 6, 2005.
USING COMMUNICATION TO FOSTER NON-VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Room M114
Guest Presenters: Gloria Lopez, University of Madrid, Complutense Hope Jolles, Humanist Center of Cultures, Elmhurst Communication Project
Ms. Lopez and Ms. Jolles are scholars and community activists who have dedicated their life to addressing the all important issue of violence perpetrated against women, youth and persons of color. They have both worked to raise the consciousness and awareness of students and community residents of the far reaching effects of violence, and have organized community efforts to eradicate violent behavior. Ms. Jolles, a local activist, will share some of her experiences working in the Elmhurst Communication Project here in Queens, while Ms. Lopez will share her insights and experiences around some of the intricacies and challenges of galvanizing students at the University of Madrid. Both will address how they have used tools of effective communication to build relationships and to bring down some of the common barriers that may foster negative interactions that can escalate to violence.
This is the first workshop in a planned series of presentations that will allow the Student Center for Women and the LaGuardia Community to become more aware of some of the international concerns facing women. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
This workshop is presented in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
