【profile】 Katsura Kan, a native of Kyoto born in 1948, is a Butoh dancer from among the ranks of Japan ’s third generation of ANKOKU Butoh (dance of darkness). He performed with the seminal Butoh troupe, “Byakkosha” , known for its austerity and integrity, rather than the theatrical glamour other troupes became known for, He is a celebrated solo and collaborative performer as well as choreographer, established his own group "KATSURA Kan & Saltimbanques" in 1986, Kan has worked with what he calls “ minority dancers” all over the world, in remote locations from Africa to SE Asia for the past 26 years, in addition to his creative works in cosmopolitan culture, strongly takes an initiative as an international Butoh scene.

BUTOH, Kan believes, is capable of break through our conscious barrier and reaching our precognitive identity, which we all hold deep within us. Kan will guide you the way to find your costume through silent walk, create the rhythmic patterns in the stillness and identify the quality of movement with non human movement.
