“I don’t know if economics is needed anymore. We need Buddhism. We need Compassion. We need Ren. We need Benevolence. I’ve come to believe that the Sustainable Development Goals are as simple as the ABC’s. Aristotle, Buddha, Confucius. … Aristotle had the basic idea that human beings are a mix of animal instincts and higher rationality, and it is our purpose to think and behave properly as rational human beings including our social and political orders. The Buddha taught compassion as the basis for escaping the cycle of suffering. And Confucius taught virtue and that all people are brothers within the four seas… that this is one humanity and one world. If we abide by the ABC’s we will achieve sustainable development.”

On Thursday 3 August 2023, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Charity Foundation organised the Global Symposium for Common Goodness in Taiwan. Over 3 hours in length and excellent contributions throughout. In particular was the keynote address (and additional comments) given by Dr Jeffrey Sachs, with outstanding clarity and commentary on the current state of the world. Uplifting, educational, a vision of synthesis and unity, and definitely a serious and tangible message of hope despite the problems currently faced by humanity. One of the very best speeches I have heard this year, which starts around 35mins in and lasts around 45mins. Link below and highly recommended viewing.

Symposium details below.

‘As time passes, the world is constantly changing, but can humans direct these changes toward a better future? The growing impact of extreme weather events exacerbates existing issues of resource inequality and wealth disparity, which have been further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, leading to food and energy crises.

To address these global issues, the United Nations has set forth seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs) to achieve by 2030. In addition to the UN's efforts, there are many scholars, experts, and practitioners in various fields working towards solving these problems. Among them is Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and the 2022 Tang Prize laureate in Sustainable Development.

In the face of complex global challenges, Dr. Sachs has proposed effective strategies to tackle issues such as debt crises, hyperinflation, transitioning from a planned economy to a market economy, poverty reduction, and combating human-induced climate change. His proposals have gained recognition from various stakeholders.

To advance cross-disciplinary approaches that address global issues, the Tzu Chi Global Symposium for Common Goodness will invite Dr. Sachs to share his approach for integrating global economy, public health, social justice, and sustainability. Joining him in the discussion will be esteemed experts including Dr. Liu Chao-Shiuan, former Premier of the Executive Yuan, Dr. Daigee Shaw, Research Fellow of the Institute of Economics at Academia Sinica, Dr. Shu-Heng Chen, Vice President of National Chengchi University, and Dr. Rey-Sheng Her, Deputy CEO of the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation.

As an NGO grounded in Buddhism, the Tzu Chi Foundation promotes the values of "common goodness" and "common responsibility" to address global problems. Through the Global Symposium for Common Goodness, Tzu Chi intends to facilitate international and interdisciplinary partnerships to establish an academic exchange platform that promotes global sustainability.’
