Ray K. Metzker graduated with a master's degree from the Chicago Institute of Design, with its strong connections back to the design based Bauhaus course. His graduate thesis was taken in Chicago (1957-9), using the inner city area to explore photographic techniques and possibilities.
In Europe over the next few years he concentrated more on tone and textures, while back in Philadelpia he worked close-up to people on the street exploring gestures.
However he is best-known for his double-frame pictures, multi-frame composites and couplets. The composites used perhaps 7 rows of 5 pictures, taken with a strongly geometric and high contrast theme, conceived and printed to become a single image. The couplets are two frames paired together often with a shared motif or visual pun.
