Grave jazz-fuelled hip-hop....

Following in the footsteps of DJ Shadow and other brooding cut-and-pasters, Brighton’s Nostalgia 77 produces jazz-influenced atmospheric hip-hop that sends shivers down your spine and makes you involuntarily nod to the sudden appearance of a dirty beat. Warm, organic double basses and wandering semi-acoustic guitars drift satisfyingly on a bed of scuzzy drums and discordant pianos. There’s some interesting production quirks, like a harder, darker Four Tet, with sudden stops and weird noises. It’s a haunting wake of an album but there’s also some sun breaking though the dark cloud. And it’s very good. (9/10) Matt Walton 13 February 04
