Hello former MASSIE students -
Happy new year to you all! Whether you finished the program last year or five years ago, I hope that you still remember your MASSIE time with fondness and still keep in touch with all your friends. If it has been awhile since you've seen each other as a class, a residence, or an entire group, here are two great chances to fix that...
First, on Saturday, February 21, there will be an All-MASSIE Reunion at the Hub (Namba Da Ole) Pub in Osaka. It's located on the third floor of the Oriental Hotel and is MUCH bigger than the reunion location last year. Speaking of last year, I really felt badly that we had such a short time together. It was a small space with a lot of people and a separate MTA reunion (with the Vice-President) afterwards. It was great to see so many of you again but it was disappointing for me that I didn't get to speak with all of you. This year, I'm hoping to change that. Instead of being 2hrs, the reunion will be 4hrs (1-5pm). The first two hours will be very casual with nothing formal planned. Simply drop by for a drink and a chat. Starting at 3pm there will be some games, prizes, and photos. We can then continue to visit until the reunion finishes at 5pm. Just to be clear, you don't have to stay for the full four hours. You can come for 30min, 1 hour, or - if you're really hard-core - the whole afternoon. MASSIE will provide some snacks but you will have to buy your own drinks.
To confirm that you plan to attend or MIGHT attend, please reply to this email by Saturday, February 14 (Valentine's Day - easy to remember). This year's student assistants will email you back to confirm that your name has been added to the guest list. When you do reply, please remember to include your MASSIE year and program (summer or fall). This will help to make it much easier for our student assistants to identify you.
If you now live in the Tokyo area, I'm planning to hold an All-MASSIE Reunion there too. Unfortunately for those couples out there, the only date that works is Saturday, February 14. Who is your one true love, MASSIE or your boyfriend/girlfriend? Why choose? Bring him/her to the party! A location for the reunion has not been determined yet. I expect it will be a small group so we can decide this together. I'm certainly open to suggestions. Please sign up by replying to this message by Saturday, February 7.
If you prefer to register on-line, an event for the Osaka reunion has been created on Facebook. The same will be done soon with the Tokyo reunion. If you go to the MASSIE Alumni Facebook page and look at the "Wall" section, you will see that I've posted a link to the Osaka reunion site. Click on the link and then register by going to the "RSVP" section (on the right) and selecting "Attending," "Maybe Attending," or "Not Attending." You can find the same link on my personal Facebook page by going to the "Profile" tab. Please register quickly before you forget and make other plans for that afternoon! Registering on Facebook is fun because you can quickly and easily see who else is coming.
Yoshiko and the kids will not be joining me in Japan this year, so I'll be on my own. I hope that doesn't decrease your interest in wanting to come! That said, a number of MTA students who were once involved with the program and are now living in Japan will be there. Here are the names of some of the people who have signed up for the Osaka event already: Katie Davidson, Laura O'Laney, Rachel MacLennan, Jean-Francois Aresenau, and Robyn Rotchford. There might be others who are planning to go but who haven't replied yet. It should be a good time.
I look forward to seeing you again and hearing all the news about your lives since MASSIE.
