I often miss-hearing not only English but also Japanese.
I have one story.
I don't know the English meaning of "アビエーター" (This is a movie Leonardo Dicaprio appeared.).
I check the dictionary and find.
* alligator : ワニ
Huuuum, it means "ワニ".
That movie is the story of "ワニ".
What??
Is Dicaprio part of "ワニ"?
It is very strange!!
Maybe it is mistake.
Spelling mistake ?
Hearing mistake?
I recheck and recheck.
.... and finally find the correct meaning.
* aviator : 飛行士
I understand perfectly.

私もアメリカ人と果物の話している時に勘違いが起きました。
何と何を勘違いしたかというと・・。
(英語は適当です。)
相手
"What fruit do you like?"
私
"I like marron.
In autumn,we boil rice with marron.And It taste good!!"
相手
"???? Really? do you boil marron? How do you cut it? It taste sweet?"
私
"Sure, it taste sweety.and we cut them into about half."
相手
"I can't belive it,How many maron do you use?"
私
"Uncountable, there are MANY marrons!!"
相手
"Many marron????? How large the pot is?"
ここらへんでなんか勘違いしていることに気づきました。
相手は、melon だと思っていたんです。
こっちは marron が英語だと思ってしゃべっていて、お互い
メロン と マロン って言ってたんですが、私にはすべて marron と聞こえていて、相手はすべて melon と聞こえていたんです。
それで相手が変な顔をしてた理由がわかりました。
栗は英語で chestnuts というそうです。
何と何を勘違いしたかというと・・。
