at the beginning of the 21st century, when we are increasingly seeing the moving image abandon the cinema ofr the gallery- a shift made possible by the edigital revolution - it is becoming necessary to redifine film without reference to its previous conditions of existence: by referencem thenm not to the narrow context of the history of cinema, but to the wider field of the history of art. A thematic rather than chronological presentation of works from the collection of the Musee national d'art Moderne,"Le movement des images" offers a rereading of 20th-century and contemporary art from the cinematic point of view- a rereading guided by the museum's own film collection, which covers the entire history of avant-darde and experimental cinema. Shown in continuous projection on the gallery wallsm the films find themselves inscribed in a new temporality, pro-voking new ways of seeing and thinking than reflect in their turnon the works of art alongside. The fundamental features of the filmic experience "Succession", "Projection", "Narrative", and "Montage", are no longer restricted to the traditional apparatus of film, but can be seen as principles of renewal in the production and reception of works of art more generally.
