The Boston Celtics' recent 4 games sweep of the West have silenced doubts that they're only good enough to compete in the weaker Easten Conference. If they can carry on this winning momentum to the second half of the season, they have a good chance of reaching the 70-win plateau, in which only one NBA team has ever done it - the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. Currently, the Boston Celtics are matching the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls game by game
Haha i'm with you actually. They still yet to play some of the
REALLY strong teams of the West, such as the Suns and the Spurs.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see でも as far as reaching 70 wins
goes, anything is possible
I have been watching their games very closely, and I am convinced that the Celtics' defense is far better than any team in NBA, including Spurs, Suns, and Marvs. I am sure they can beat these teams. I look forward to those games coming, and NBA final. 2008 is the year for Boston.
I too, have been watching the celtics closely...via NBA.com Unfortunately the cables in Australia don't exactly have the same NBA
coverage as the US. We get a mere 4 live games per week, with no choice
of which teams we like to watch
Anyway back to the topic To say the Celtics' defense is better
than any other teams in NBA is a broad, yet feasible statement.
They are currently restricting the opponents to 87pts per game (lowest
in NBA), which is remarkable. However, let's not forget both the Suns
and the Mavs have been to the NBA finals on several occasions, whilst
the Spurs have won 4 NBA titles. It's gonna be interesting to see
who prevails in the end
I hate to bring this up, but the last time the Suns made it to the finals was in 1993 with Barkley. Did you mean another team?
Anyhow, I think the teams that pose the biggest threat to the Celts right now are the Pistons and Spurs. The Pistons are playing great ball right now, and although the Spurs have been stumbling a bit, they're still the defending champs for a reason - they still have all the pieces of a championship team.
The Suns can't play defense anywhere close to the Pistons and Spurs. The Mavs crumbled last year, and even the year before that, Dirk had too many low scoring games in the playoffs and missed critical free throws even though he's a good free throw shooter. The Celts should clean up the rest league.
I'm really looking foward to the games when they go to the Texas triangle to play the Spurs and the Mavs. That could be a preview of the NBA finals, and if the Celts get blown out, it's gonna be really bad news. Even if they lose, as long as it's close, the chances will still look good.
You're rite. The last time the Suns reached NBA finals was back in 93-94 when they eventually lost to the greatest team ever, the Chicago Bulls.
My bad. I meant to say the conference finals, not the finals.
As far as winning goes, i'm confident to say the Celtics will claim
conference title. The only other team capable of giving the Celtics a
run for their money is the Pistons. And if my memory serves me correct
this time, the last time these two teams went head to head, the Pistons
won by a mere 2 points. The Celtics will get a second chance to prove
they are a better team in a couple of days' time.
According to your analysis, we can rule out the Suns and the Mavs as
potential threats in the West. That then leaves the Spurs the only team
up to the challenge. I also can't wait to see how their first meeting
will turn out, but i seriously doubt the Celtics will get their asses
whipped. Let's not forget they're leading NBA in fewest points allowed
for opponents, so that's gonna say something about their defense.
But hey, who am i to judge who is a better team. Let's wait and see how
their first meeting goes and then we shall have a chat again
Top 2 teams in NBA:
It's still too early to make predictions, but if the season keeps going the way it is right now, it looks like the real NBA finals will be between the Celts and the Pistons. Both teams look very solid; all other teams have some kind of flaw.
Spurs:
I don't follow the Spurs, but I can't remember the last time Duncan, Ginobli, and Parker had injuries in the same season. If those injuries come back playoff time, I can see the Spurs not winning the conference finals.
Mavs:
They're too reliant on Dirk, who plays inconsistently in crunch time.
Suns:
The Suns don't have any serious flaws other than their not so great defense, so I predict they'll win the WCF. I love watching their fastbreak, score first and ask questions later style of play, so it'll be cool to see them VS the Celts in the finals. I hate the Spurs and Pistons, so at the least, I don't wanna see either of those teams in the Finals.
If the Pistons and the Celtics are going to meet in the eastern
conference finals, they're certainly travelling in the rite direction.
Boston have won 8 straight, whilst the Pistons have won a feakish 11
straight. Their second meeting of the regular season bound to be a close game, but if i were to pick the winner now, i'd put my money on the
Celtics
I've never liked the Spurs anyway. I know defense wins championships,
but sorry to say, they're just too damn boring to watch
The Mavs USED to rely solely on Dirk, but in this season, players
like Josh Howard and Jason Terry seem to be carrying the team.
The Suns? Man forget about the Suns Steve Nash may be leading NBA
in assists, but he also turns the ball over 4 times a game.
Too inconsistent.
Celts got their revenge! Not only did they beat the Pistons 92-85, they did it at Detroit! I was really worried that the Celts wouldn't win, but this game turned out to be a huge statement game, perhaps the biggest of this season so far.
Depth:
When the big 3 all score 20 or so points each, of course they're gonna win. But what if they have subpar nights like tonight - KG 15, Pierce 19, Allen 9 - most teams would lose when 3 of their best players play subpar, especially when KG and Allen had foul trouble and only played 30 min or so each. But instead, the rest of the team picked up the slack and beat arguably the best team in the league and on the road!
Statement win!:
This victory sends a message to the rest of the league: even if our big 3 have limited minutes, only shoot subpar, and we're on the road, we can still beat any team in the league. The best team on paper proved that they're also the best team in practice - this victory distinguished any worries I had about the Celts taking it all.
I think the Celts now need to work out their flaws by being tested by a tough team (i.e. Suns, healthy Spurs). It's better to be blown out during a regular season than during a playoffs - that way, they can think about their flaws, make a trade (if it's before the trade deadline) if necessary. I read somewhere that the Celts' weakness is Rondo cuz he can't match up with the elite guards of the league. I'm not exactly sure about that assessment, but if the Celts do have a flaw, it's better to know now than later. Personally, I don't really care if they the Celts win 70, although it would be cool - I won't be happy unless they win a championship, so bad losses here and there are fine as long as the Celts learn from it.

I don't follow the Mavs, so I'll take your word about the Mavs - the 2 games I watched of them, they barely beat GS and Miami without Shaq and Wade. To me, that looks really bad. I like Dirk and Stackhouse, but I don't really know anything about the rest of the team.
About Nash, he actually averages 3.6 turnovers per game. Kidd averages 3.7, and a number of other good players like Lebron and Kobe also average a little over 3 turnovers a game. I understand you don't like him, but I don't think his flaw is TOs - some NBA fans suggested that it's his defense. But personally, I think he's the best PG in the league.
Thanks for your comments as always. I never said i dislike Nash. I'm just
saying he's inconsistent and he's hardly the best point guard in the
league. He might be in the top 5, but definitely not the best. Players
like Chris Paul who averages 21.6 points, 10.3 assits, and 2.56 turnover per game is a better point guard. He should be MUCH higher on the
all-star ballot. You know what would really make my day? To see him
start in All-Star game while Nash sits on the bench
The reasons I like Nash is because he is one of the best FT shooters in NBA history, good passer, good 3-point shooter, and can score if necessary (he scored 51 points in a playoff game 2 seasons ago, if I recall correctly). I haven't seen the Hornets play this season, so I can't really say anything about Paul. Maybe he is better than Nash; I'll just have to take your word for it.
G'day Kel i have to confess i was a bit drunk when i wrote that
previous entry. I guess i was just mad cos the Suns lost to the Hornets
yet again If you include preseason matches, that makes 3
consecutives losses to the Hornets! Come on, a good team don't lose to
the same opponent 3 in a row! Of course i like Nash. He's the reason why i changed my jersey number to 13 in the first place But the way he and the rest of the Suns' playing recently is just disappointing
Very disappointing loss to the Bobcats (13-21) at home Sure, Ray Allen and Glen Davis weren't playing, but to lose by 12 pts? Now they can't match the Larry Bird Celtics' home record of 40-1 Oh well...
Exactly. You can't win every game. Unless you're the 1995-96 Chicago
Bulls. But you know what i really think? The Bston Celtics got a little
carried away in this game
This may be a sign of fatigue. They have been playing so well with high tension for a while. In addition, Bobcats was playing well last night. We'll see how they do in NJ. I am personally not worried. Record is just a record, it does not matter. It's about winning NBA title.
Did anyone watch the games where they lost to the Wizards twice? It's hard to tell what's wrong just by looking at stats and summaries on nba.com. It looks like the Wizards may be what Golden State was to the Mavs last season?
G'day Kel. How are you mate? I was thinking the same thing, 'What the
hell is wrong with the Celtics'. I think i've mentioned this before but a good team don't lose at home 2 in a row, especially not to the same
team!
This is a big time reality check for the Celtics and they better
pick their socks up quick smart before they fall into a losing streak
Good win VS Dallas, especially without KG. Next test will be Feb 10 VS San Antonio, then a couple playoff bound teams in the west, including the Suns. February and March will be very interesting considering all the western teams they'll have to play.
I have just witnessed the end of Rockets' winning streak. It was by the hhands of Celtics. What was impressive in today's game was bench players and Boston's resilient effort to defend. I think today's win proved that this year's Celtics is real and they may be the number one contender for the NBA championship.
