Ozu’s Tokyo Story opens in cinemas nationwide on 1 January 2010
The BFI is celebrating the extraordinary career of Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu in January and February 2010. His 1953 masterpiece Tokyo Story will be re-released in cinemas nationwide on 1 January. Frequently featured in the top five of the Sight & Sound Critics’ polls, this emotionally piercing film has made Ozu’s reputation in the west. Tokyo Story explores the spaces between what’s said and what cannot be said, finessing a keen sense of life’s disappointments and the disintegration of Japanese family values. BFI Southbank will put on a complete retrospective of the master's surviving work throughout January and February, with extended runs of Tokyo Story and Late Autumn (also on release nationwide from 29 January).
