"There's no question that Ichiro's a great hitter and I did it 10 times, but I didn't do it 10 times in a row. And I did 198 twice, too, and I did 192 once, so I guess at the time ... if I knew there was going to be someone challenging that I probably would have worked harder and gotten a couple more hits in those two years. But it's hard to do because you have to stay healthy and you have to be able to hit a baseball.
"Now the only problem, and the only negative thing I could ever say about Ichiro, would be this; that Ichiro gets a lot of hits but he doesn't get many walks. OK? So you gotta remember I got all those hits but I got close to 1,600 walks too."
"He hits the ball everywhere, you can't play him one way. He might hit a ball to right field, he might hit a ball to left field, he might hit a ball to center field. Those guys are hard to defend. It's hard to defend you when you hit to all three fields like that.
"And he can run so fast, if you don't hit the ball right to the fielder he beats it out, you know. And he's got some luck, too. I mean he's a lucky hitter, too, which is OK because a couple of years ago he got something like 70 infield hits. That's unheard of. I mean look here, you've got 68 infield hits. That's amazing. I mean, that's not bunts, that's balls and infielders you've beat out."
