UCLA has received 20 signed letters of intent from football recruits today, beefing up their numbers and talent where its team needed it most -- on the offensive line.

The Bruins' list, which is currently rated among the top 10 in the nation by the Scout.com recruiting website, includes six offensive linemen: high school players Xavier Su'a Filo of Provo (Utah) Timpview, Stanley Hasiak of Hawaii Kapolei, Nik Abele of Irvine and Greg Capella of Visalia El Diamante, plus junior college transfers Ryan Taylor of Tyler (Texas.) College and Eddie Williams of Compton College.

Also signing was running back Damien Thigpen from Manassas, Va. Stonewall Jackson, fullback and linebacker Jayson Allmond of Fontana Bloomington, linebackers Isaiah Bowens of La Puente Bishop Amat, Todd Golper of Arcadia and Taniela Maka of Long Beach Jordan, defensive ends Keenan Graham of Las Vegas Silverado, Iuta Tepa of Long Beach Poly and Jared Koster of Norco, and defensive backs Alex Mascarenas of Mission Viejo, Marlon Pollard of San Bernardino Cajon, Sheldon Price of Bishop Amat and Brandon Sermons of Pomona Diamond Ranch.

The Bruins also have quarterback Richard Brehaut of Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos, who will sign an acceptance of enrollment today and begin attending classes in the spring quarter. Players enrolling before the summer cannot sign letters of intent. Brehaut hopes to compete for the starting quarterback job immediately.

"When we looked at the schools we were choosing from, education was the No. 1 priority," Brehaut said. "I knew I wasn't going to play football forever and UCLA can set me up for the future."

Brehaut said that offensive coordinator Norm Chow was another big reason he chose the Bruins.

"I can't think of a better coach to play under," Brehaut said.

The Bruins lost one player they thought they had -- tight end Billy Sanders of Phoenix Brophy Prep, who signed with Miami. Sanders originally committed to the Hurricanes, but said last month he had switched to the Bruins.

Even so, UCLA already has a highly rated freshman tight end -- Morrell Presley of Carson, who is already attending classes.

Hasiak's signing was significant because the 6 feet 6, 320-pound prospect had waffled between UCLA and California the past month. The Bruins had him as such a priority that Chow was sent to see him. Hasiak is ranked fourth nationally as a lineman by Rivals.com.

Su'a Filo, 6-4, 285, is the seventh-ranked high school tackle nationally by Rivals.com. He had received offers from USC, Lousiana State, Notre Dame, as well as other top programs.

Abele is 6-6, 252 pounds and was heavily recruited by several Pacific 10 Conference teams. He can play either defense or offense.

Capella, 6-4, 326, is the 40th ranked guard in the nation according to Rivals.com.

Williams, 6-1, 315, and Taylor, 6-2, 280, will be counted on to give the Bruins immediate help.

The Bruins added some badly needed speed by signing the 5-9, 170-pound Thigpen, who reportedly runs a 4.34 40-yard dash. He originally committed to Tennessee and Notre Dame also made a late bid for him.

Bowens, 6-3, 220, was a sleeper early in recruiting, but possesses 4.55 speed in the 40-yard dash. By the time the fall rolled around, he was ranked 48th nationally among outside linebackers by Rivals.com.

Graham is, at 6-3, 220, undersized as a defensive end but has 4.59 speed in the 40 and could be moved to linebacker.

Golper, 6-0, 225, was another early commit and is the 10th ranked inside linebacker by Rivals.com.

Tepa, The Times' lineman of the year this past season, is 6-3, 230 and was recruited heavily by Pac-10 and Big 12 Conference teams.

Koster, 6-1, 220 pounds, could be moved to linebacker.

Maka is 6 feet 1, 220 pounds. He switched his commitment from Arizona to UCLA last month.

Mascarenas, who is 5-10, 175 pounds, was an early commitment last spring. He has 4.55 speed in the 40 and is expected to play safety.

Pollard is 6-1 and 160 pounds. He is one of the jewels of the recruiting class. He committed to UCLA as a junior, then switched to Notre Dame last summer before being enticed back last month. He is the 14th-ranked cornerback nationally by Rivals.com and has the potential to be a high-impact player.

Price, 6-2, 155 pounds, is the 24th-ranked cornerback nationally by Rivals.com.

Sermons, 6-0, 176 pounds, is the 33rd-ranked cornerback nationally by Rivals.com.

Pollard, Price and Sermons give the Bruins three young cornerbacks to go with the quality young safeties they brought in last season.
