There is little difference between British English and American English.
For example... accelerator and gas pedal,autumn and fall,cinema and movie theatre,lift and elevator...etc.
One day,a man from Ireland who speaks British English said to me"Go to a surgery!!". Untill that time,I recognised the word "surgery"is the thing that surgeon does. So I could not understand that meaning.
But for him,"surgery"was Dental clinic.
Dentist usually describes his profession "D.D.S.". DDS is Doctor of dental surgery. I understood the meaning of surgery at that time.(^_^;
