surviving sustainability:_________________________

The forth collection from ffiXXed is part of an ongoing project examining different ideas about 'sustainable practice'. Currently based in Shenzhen China, ffiXXed elaborate their own form of sustainable living, exploring new ways to directly engage the production and use of ffiXXed products, taking into account the everyday social, cultural, economic and environmental contexts of the ffiXXed designers/ ffiXXed producers/ ffiXXed consumers, with enjoyment, comfort and stability key concerns for all.

These concerns form the basis for each peice in the collection. They continue their exploration of everyday basics, combining aspects of formal tailoring with casual, sports and outdoor wear, to negotiate various aspects of daily life, at home, in the office, in city, or wherever. Elements of trans-seasonal, trans-functionality run throughout the collection, with detachable visors and scarves, unexpected pockets and storage devices that relate to practical as well as more aesthetic and creative applications, whether protecting against the sun, against pickpockets in busy urban areas, or just the fact of living and working in a single space.

This season ffiXXed have collaborated with New York based artist Ester Partegàs to produce a series of new printed garments within the collection. Exploring the refuse of consumer culture, Ester’s work finds new forms of creative and social agency outside of the controlled spaces defined by expected consumer behaviours. For surviving sustainability:___________________ Ester has contributed a series of collages constructed from the in-between spaces torn from the graphic landscape of magazine pages. These pieces are reconfigured to generate new forms, which like the ffiXXed collection try to find space for a more open and fluid negotiation of consumer culture.
The original works are show at Christopher Grimes gallery, Santa Monica September 11 – October 10.
