Venue Sugarbag Festival Grounds, Mt Garnet, Nth Qld, Australia.
In the expanse of the Australian outdoor festival culture, Winter Solstice Lifestyle Gathering holds a special place in the hearts and minds of punters from not only Cairns, but from around the country and indeed the globe as well. The annual event, in its fourth year in 2009, was one of the region’s biggest and most creative festivals, attracting well over a hundred acts, performers, healers and artists over four days and three nights in the rugged beauty of the Atherton Tablelands.
The thing about Winter Solstice is that it’s much more than a Far North Queensland event, instead being one of Australia’s premier alternative life style festivals with a strong focus on entertainment for all the ages and a holistic festival experience. Thousands of punters have been known to travel from interstate and overseas just to attend, proving it’s not only one of the region’s top music and arts events, but a global tourism draw-card as well. With a broad range of musical styles – from electronic music to live bands and solo acts – as well as roving performers, fire shows, healing areas, sustainability exhibitions and market stalls, Winter Solstice definitely deserves its spot as the winner of the Best Festival in the timeOUT Awards 2009.

Laughter Yoga is a series of non-strenuous playful activities suitable for people of all ages. Laughter Yoga welcomes people with mental or physical challenges, so everyone can come and enjoy a dose of "the best medicine"! After a session of Laughter Yoga you will have boosted your immune system, reduced your levels of cortisol (stress hormone), released endorphins ("feel good" hormones) into your blood stream, given your heart an aerobics exercise, released T-cells (natural painkillers) into your blood stream, improved your circulation, lost approximately 150 calories and exercised the equivalent half an hour on a rowing machine! That's just a few reasons to laugh, and all this lasts 3 hours depending on the individual! Because the brain doesn't know the difference between real laughter and fake, it releases endorphins as soon as you HO HO HA HA! So pretty soon you're just simply laughing without any effort! Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to giggle, guffaw, belly laugh and snort! Kimmy O'Meara has been a facilitator of fun for 5 years now, and was awarded International Laughter Ambassador for outstanding work in the community through laughter in 2008. She is on the committee of Laugh W.A and travels throughout Australia laughing at festivals, schools, nursing homes, markets and anywhere else people are willing to have fun and maintain well being.

SACRED GEOMETRY ORIGAMI - Derryn Knuckey
In addition to bringing people together, exploring the relationships between things is integral to my journey. Having explored my passion for sacred geometry for several years, I first started making digital mandalas from nature photographs while traveling Cape York and working on community projects a couple of years ago. Keeping the designs simple revealed a way for country to ‘speak’ that was new to me. More recently I have been learning folding patterns which permit square pieces of paper to become interlocking pieces that connect, forming sacred geometric 3D objects. I’m currently based in Melbourne creating and exhibiting mandala designs in 3D whenever possible.
