NEW YORK (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki slashed a single the opposite way with his unique swing for the 4,000th hit of a career split between Japan and the major leagues.

The 39-year-old Suzuki hit a liner off Toronto's R.A. Dickey that bounced just beyond diving third baseman Brett Lawrie in the first inning Wednesday night for the milestone hit.

Suzuki broke a tie with Lou Gehrig when he got his 2,722nd major league hit in his 13th season. The speedy outfielder amassed 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix of Japan's Pacific League.

Suzuki's Yankees teammates streamed out of the dugout and surrounded him at first base, Curtis Granderson giving him the first hug. A grinning Suzuki then faced the cheering fans and bowed.
When he went to his position in right field for the second inning, Suzuki tipped his cap to the fans who greeted him with a standing ovation.

Ken Griffey Jr., a former teammate with the Seattle Mariners, congratulated Suzuki with a message shown on the video board at Yankee Stadium.

The Mariners tweeted a statement: ''Ichiro's historic milestone is testament to his position as one of the greatest hitters in the game of baseball.''

Pete Rose with 4,256 hits and Ty Cobb with 4,191 are the only two players that have reached the number solely in the major leagues.

According to STATS, Suzuki has the most hits through the first 13 seasons of a big league career. Paul Waner is second. He had 2,648 for Pittsburgh from 1926-38.

Even though the approach to the unprecedented milestone didn't generate a lot of buzz in the United States because it doesn't count in the record books, players have great respect for Suzuki's accomplishment.

''That's a lot of hits, man,'' Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said last week. ''It's pretty impressive. I don't care if it's 4,000 in Little League. It shows how consistent he's been throughout his career. It makes you look at how many hits he's got in a short amount of time. That's difficult to do, so Ichi has been as consistent as anyone.''
To Suzuki, though, the rarefied number means one thing.

''Not necessarily the 4,000, just the fact that you're getting a hit in the game,'' he said through an interpreter after getting three hits in the opener of a doubleheader Tuesday for 3,999. ''If you don't produce you're not going to play in games. Me producing in games is what's good for me.''

He has been producing since he was an 18-year-old rookie with the Blue Wave.

A career .353 hitter in Japan, Suzuki became the first Japanese-born non-pitcher to sign with a major league team. He smoothly made the move from Orix to the Mariners in 2001 when he was 27. He was selected as AL Rookie of the Year and MVP in his first season when he batted .350, had 242 hits and stole 56 bases.

The slender 10-time All-Star seemingly could place the ball wherever he wanted with a slashing swing that makes him look more like an epee-wielding fencer than a professional baseball player.

Suzuki had at least 206 hits in each of his first 10 years in the majors, peaking in 2004 when he set the record for hits in a season with 262, topping George Sisler's mark of 257 established in 1920.

His hit Wednesday night was the 2,209th single of his career.

Uniquely fashionable, Suzuki often wears skinny jeans cuffed at the bottom to show off a rainbow of shoes and socks. He looks more like a 20-something than a graying star in his favorite designer Thom Browne.

Despite his age, Suzuki should have a good shot at the revered major league mark of 3,000 hits, one that doesn't come with debates over the merits of the achievement. He is signed for one more year with New York at $6.5 million, and the 10-time Gold Glove winner is still is an outstanding outfielder.

''Nobody will say anything about 3,000,'' Suzuki said. ''There will be no debating about that.''
Suzuki hasn't made Rose's mark a goal.

After a down season in 2011 in which he hit a career-low .272 for a Seattle team that lost 95 games, Suzuki was traded to New York in July 2012.

Accused of isolating himself in the young Mariners clubhouse, Suzuki easily fit into the star-studded Yankees room and hit .322 the rest of the season.

He is batting .275 with New York this year.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki stood near first base after lining a single for his 4,000th hit, hugging his teammates one by one, basking in the resounding cheers of an adoring Yankee Stadium crowd.

In that moment it did not matter that his name would not be listed in Major League Baseball's record book next to Ty Cobb and Pete Rose, the only two players to reach the milestone solely in the major leagues.

Everyone involved Wednesday night knew: this was quite an achievement.

''I was overwhelmed,'' Suzuki said of the reception.

The 39-year-old outfielder slashed a single the opposite way in the first inning off Toronto knuckleballer R.A. Dickey that bounced just beyond diving third baseman Brett Lawrie for hit No. 4,000 in a career split between Japan and the major leagues.

''It's an astronomical number,'' Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said. ''He's set a new standard in baseball and I offer Ichiro my heartfelt congratulations.''

With his 2,722nd hit in the big leagues he passed Yankees Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig in his 13th season in the United States. The speedy outfielder amassed 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix of Japan's Pacific League.

Rose finished with 4,256 hits and Cobb had 4,191, but Suzuki is not thinking about catching Rose.

MLB does not recognize Suzuki's overall mark, but players and coaches around the league marvel at the rarely heard number.

''It's an amazing feat,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ''It's a testament to how hard he's worked, how long he's been in the game, how he stays healthy, how he goes about his business.''

Suzuki was surprised when his teammates streamed out of the dugout and surrounded him at first base, Curtis Granderson giving him the first hug. Suzuki said he felt bad that the game was being stopped for him and he tried to prevent the Yankees from coming onto the field, but he was grateful.

The broad grin that broke out when he saw his team said it all.

''It was supposed to be a number that was special to me, but what happened tonight I wasn't expecting,'' Suzuki said. ''When my teammates came out to first base it was very special, and to see the fans. I wasn't expecting so much joy and happiness from them and that's what made it very special tonight.''

Suzuki acknowledged the fans by doffing his helmet and bowing several times, the final one toward the Blue Jays' dugout.

"You never want to be the guy that gives up the milestone,'' Dickey said. ''That being said, what an incredible achievement. The manner that he's done it is equally impressive. Just the longevity, the endurance, the durability. Having played with him in Seattle, it was a real treat to play with him and it couldn't have happened to a more professional hitter.''

When he went to his position in right field for the second inning, Suzuki tipped his cap to the fans who greeted him with a standing ovation.

Ever since he was an 18-year-old rookie for Orix who didn't think he was ready to be called up to the big club, Suzuki's approach has been one at-bat at a time. And his thought process wasn't any different when he tried to embrace the idea of 3,000 major league hits, an accepted marker for a Hall of Fame career.

''I don't make goals that are so far away,'' Suzuki said. ''What I do is do what I can every day and really build off that and see where that takes me.''

＜イチロー＞「悔しい思い８０００回以上」それが誇り

【ニューヨーク小坂大】米大リーグ、ヤンキースのイチロー外野手（３９）が２１日、地元ヤンキースタジアムでのブルージェイズ戦で日米通算４０００安打を達成した。試合後、４５分間にわたった記者会見で丁寧に質問に応じたイチロー外野手は「クールな天才」像を脱いだ人間味をにじませた。

１１年半在籍したマリナーズ時代。低迷するチームをけん引するため安打を打ち続けたにもかかわらず「記録を追い求める利己的な選手」とあらぬ批判を受けて悩んだ。２０１０年の日米通算３５００安打達成時には「祝福の演出はやめて」とチームに申し入れたほどだった。

今回は記録達成の瞬間に観客が総立ちになり、仲間がベンチから飛び出してきた。「うれしすぎてやめてほしいと思った」。周囲の素直な感情がイチロー外野手の心を開いたのだろう。安打の一つ一つへの思い入れを語り出した。「いい結果を生んできた誇れる自分はいない。４０００安打を打つためには８０００回以上も（凡打で）悔しい思いをした。それと向き合ってきた。誇れるとしたらそこではないか」

偉業を重ねてきた２２年間のプロ生活も「人間として成熟しているか。前に進んでいるか。実は明確に感じることはできない。そうでありたいと信じてやり続けることしかできない」という。あくなき挑戦心の源泉だった。

イチロー外野手は何ごとにも貪欲だと見えた。「いえいえ」と笑って、こう否定する。「僕はいっぱい満足している。ものすごく小さなことでも満足するし、達成感もある。それを重ねないとダメ。それを感じて次が生まれてくる。うれしかったら喜べばいい」。どことなく閉塞（へいそく）感が漂う現代。元気づけるためのイチロー外野手の伝言に聞こえた。

2072分の42。イチロー流、ケガをしないための「極意」

　日本で1278本。
　メジャーで2722本。

　現地時間８月21日、イチローが日米通算4000安打を放った。

　横っ飛びしたサードの横を抜けて、レフト前に到達する鋭い打球。いつものように表情を変えることなく一塁に到達したイチローは、ダグアウトを飛び出してきたヤンキースの仲間たちの笑顔を見て、ようやく微笑んだ。試合終了の直後、ダグアウトでＮＨＫのインタビューに答えたイチローは、したたる汗と笑顔を輝かせながら、こう話した。

「実際、（4000本目の）ヒットを打ってみて、あんなふうにチームメイトやみんなが、ファンの人たちも含めて、喜んでくれるということは、まったく想像していなかったので、ちょっと半泣きになりましたし、特別な瞬間をまた作ってもらったなという思いですね。結局、4000という区切りのいい数字ですけど、特別な瞬間というのは自分の記録が作るものではなくて、自分以外の周りの人たちが作ってくれるものだというふうに強く感じました」

　4000本安打――単純に考えて、200安打を20年続けなければ届かない数字である。シーズン210本のヒットを放ったプロ３年目の1994年、レギュラーに定着してから20年目が終わらないうちに、4000本に届いてしまったのだから、驚異的なペースで成し遂げられた数字である。

　思えばメジャーにやってきた2001年。

　日本で７年も続けて首位打者を獲得したイチローとはいえ、日本で打った数の倍以上のヒットをメジャーで打つなんて、想像することもできなかった。イチローの前に日本でもっともヒットを打ったバッターは、3085本の張本勲。アメリカでは今もなお、もっともヒットをたくさん打ったのは4256本のピート・ローズ。日米通算とはいえ、4000本のヒットを打った彼よりも上にいるのはローズと、4191本のタイ・カッブのふたりだけということになる。

　なぜここまでの数のヒットを打てたのか。

　もちろん、野球選手として、走攻守、すべての分野で突出したレベルのプレイヤーであり続けたからに他ならない。

　しかし、それだけでは20年で4000安打は打てない。

　もっとも重要なことは、イチローが20年の間、試合に出続けたということである。とりわけ、メジャーに来てからのイチローは、チームが休養を目的とした休みを取らせる以外、ほとんど欠場していない。イチロー自身の体調が理由で試合に出なかったのは、2009年、第２回ＷＢＣの直後に胃潰瘍で８試合、ふくらはぎを痛めて８試合欠場したくらいだ。以下は、メジャーに移籍してからのイチローが欠場した試合数だ。

　4000本を達成するまでに、チームが戦った試合は2072試合。うちイチローが出場した試合は、2030試合。13年間での欠場はわずか、42試合しかない。

　イチローはなぜ、ケガをしないのか。

　今年の８月はじめのことだった。

　サンディエゴのペトコパークにイチローがやってきた。今シーズン、ヤンキースのサンディエゴ遠征はこの３連戦だけで、イチローにとっても、もちろん今年初めてのペトコパークということになる。

　その試合前。

　イチローが外野でノックを受けていた。セカンドベースの付近から、外野手に対して軽めのノックを打つ。それを、イチローを含めた４人の外野手が順番に受けていた。近距離から、イージーな打球を打っていたのは、久しぶりのペトコパークの芝目に慣れるためだった。

　イチローは相変わらず、身のこなしが軽い。

　後ろの打球は軽やかに追い、前の打球には激しくチャージする。捕ったら、低い弾道のボールをセカンドベース付近まで返すのだが、ノーバウンドで送球しているのはイチローだけだ。まもなく40歳になろうかという年齢は動きを見る限り、到底、イメージできない。

　何本かのノックを打った後、突然、ノッカーがイチローの前方、やや左側にフワッとした打球を上げた。

　予想もしない位置への打球に、イチローが体を急旋回させる。

　その時だった。

　スパイクではなくアップシューズを履いていたイチローが、濡れていた芝に足を滑らせた。ヒザにダメージを受けたか、太ももの内側を伸ばしたか、いずれにしても足を痛めたのではないかというような滑らせ方だった。

　しかし、イチローはケロッとしている。

　我慢しているのかとも思ったが、そうでもなさそうだ。実際、本人も何のことだという顔をして、大丈夫だと笑っていた。

　あんなアクシデントが起こっても、イチローはケガをしない。

　思い当たったのは、そのアクシデントの、ほんの15分前のイチローだ。

　ヤンキースの選手たちが、試合前の練習を行なうためにダグアウトから出てくる。イチローも軽快な足取りで三塁側のファウルグラウンドに駆け出すと、すぐさま芝の上に座り込む。

　イチローのストレッチが始まる。ゴロンと寝転がって、毎日、同じメニューのストレッチを繰り返す。そのストレッチが、あまりにも美しくて、改めて驚かされた。

　まず、想像を超える柔軟性。

　そして、ひとつひとつの動きの正確さ。

　さらに、あり得ないほどの左右対称。

　他の選手と比較してみれば、よくわかる。たとえばロビンソン・カノやマリアーノ・リベラは、それなりに丁寧なストレッチをしている。それでもしゃべりながらだったり、右をやって左をやらない、といったこともある。みんなが移動すれば、そのタイミングで彼らも一緒に移動する。しかしイチローだけは、他の選手が周りにいなくなってもストレッチを続ける。自分の決めたメニューが終わるまで、周りに流されることなく、最後までストレッチを続ける。そこに妥協はない。だからケガをしそうなアクシデントがあっても、体が十分、動いてくれるし、ケガを防いでくれるのだ。

　こんなこともあった。

　あれは、2007年の夏の出来事だ。

　マリナーズでプレイしていたイチローは、オークランドであるハプニングに出くわした。

　ノーアウト満塁で、イチローはセカンドランナーだった。続くバッターの打球が左中間を割る。三塁ランナーに続いて、二塁からイチローもホームイン、さらに３人目のランナーもホームへ突っ込んだ。

　しかし、その送球をキャッチャーが捕り損ねる。

　ボールは一塁側のマリナーズのダッグアウト前へと転がっていった。

　そこには、ホームインしたばかりのイチローが歩いていた。

　背後から足元に転がってきたボールに、イチローは気づかなかった。そのイチローの背中を、カバーリングに走ってきた相手のピッチャーが突き飛ばしたのである。そのとき、イチローの体は一瞬、宙に浮いたように見えた。イチローにしてみれば、死角から飛び込んできた相手に、よもや突き飛ばされるとは思いもよらなかったはずだ。首を痛めてもおかしくなかったし、よろめいて足をくじいても不思議ではなかった。しかし、試合後のイチローは平然とこう言った。

「あの時も僕は力を抜いていますから、突き飛ばされてもフワッて感じでした。ドーンって感じはしないですよ。いつも力を抜いていますから、それがいいんですよね。何かあった時のために、常に力を抜いていようと思ってるんです。もちろんあんなケースは予測できないけど、普段からそういうクセをつけておかないと、それをしたいときにできるわけではありませんからね」

　日常から、力を抜いて暮らしている。街でも、イチローは力を抜いて歩いているというのだ。そんな高い意識が、いざというとき、肉体を守ってくれる。イチローが以前、SPORTIVAのインタビューに答えて、こう話していたことがあった。

「赤ちゃんがマンションの何階からか落ちて、それでも軽症だったという話を聞いたんです。そういうところにヒントがあるんですよね。赤ちゃんは力の入れようがないけど、大人は落ちたくないとか、ケガをしたくないって、グッと力を入れてしまうじゃないですか。硬いものに対して、硬くなって防御しようという本能が生まれるんだと思いますけど、結局はそれでみんなケガをしてしまう。だから、赤ちゃんみたいに力を抜いていられればと思ったんです。あの話は、僕に大きなヒントを与えてくれたということですね（笑）」

　メジャーでプレイしていれば、グラウンドの上だけではなく、プライベートでも思わぬことが起こる。イチローにも、アクシデントは何度も襲いかかった。そんなとき、心と体と両方に備えがあるかどうかで、そのケガが試合に出られないほどの大事になってしまうかどうかが決まる。

　イチローはケガをしないのではない。ケガで試合に出られないことがないというだけなのだ。

　シーズン中も、体のどこかが痛いとか、擦り傷が膿（う）んだり、青あざがいつまでも消えないなどというのは、決して珍しいことではない。それでも彼は痛いことをおくびにも出さず、平気な顔で試合に出ている。心にも体にも備えがあるおかげで、ケガが大事にならずに済んでいるからだ。

　そしてイチローは、余力を残したまま、4000本という節目を走り抜けた。50歳まで現役とか5000本のヒットとか、そんな未来もイチローにかかればあり得ない話ではない――。

Ｐローズ氏、イチロー日米合算記録に抵抗

４２５６本のメジャー通算最多安打記録を持つピート・ローズ氏（７２）は、２１日に達成したイチローの日米通算４０００安打の記録を認めない姿勢を見せた。２２日付ＵＳＡトゥデー電子版に語ったもので、「彼はチームメートのジーター（通算３３０８安打）に６００安打離れている」と日米合算の記録に抵抗。さらに「イチローが俺に追い付けると思うか」と、将来的にも自身の記録が抜かれることはないと確信していた。

同氏は「（合算）だったら、マイナーで打った４２７本を（自身の通算に）加えてくれよ。プロとして打ったんだから」と主張する。野球賭博への関与で永久追放処分の身だが「復帰させてくれるなら、俺はまたプレーするよ」と冗談交じりに話した。それでもイチローの能力は評価しており「もし自分が野球殿堂の投票権を持っているなら、イチローに入れるよ。彼のプレーで問題視されるところはない」と絶賛していた。

日米通算４０００安打の偉業達成から一夜明けた２２日（日本時間２３日）、ヤンキースのイチロー外野手（３９）は１番・右翼でブルージェイズ戦に先発し、４回の第２打席に三塁線へ二塁打を放ち３打数１安打だった。そのイチローは前日の会見で通算５０００安打の「可能性はある」と話し、驚かせたがチームメートのジャバ・チェンバレン投手（２７）は「５０歳までプレーできる」と断言。前人未到の大記録に太鼓判を押した。

前日の会見で通算５０００安打の可能性について聞かれたイチローは「年齢に対する偏った見方が僕以外のところでない限り、可能性はあると思う」と自信をのぞかせた。イチローの安打ペースは２０１１年が１８４本、１２年は１７８本。このペースで行けば６年後には到達だが、果たしてその年齢までプレーすることは可能なのか。チェンバレンは肯定する。

「イチローは（日本時代から）２０年以上もフィールドに立っているけど、これからまだ５０歳まで続けようと思ったらできると思うんだ。しかも、実際にそう思っているんじゃないかと僕は思っている。４０歳近くになっても大きなけがをせず体をキープしている」

イチローがメジャー１３年間で故障者リストに入ったのは胃潰瘍を患った０９年の開幕から８試合だけ。さすがに５０歳までは無理かもしれないが、チェンバレンが予想するようにしばらく一線で活躍することができれば、５０００安打は可能だ。

チェンバレンは少年時代にイチローの活躍に胸を躍らせていた。憧れの人とのこんなエピソードを明かす。

「ある日の試合中、野球ファンの一人としては当然イチローのグラブが欲しいって言ったんだ。もちろん冗談さ。ジョークだったんだ。でも翌日、気が付いたら（ロッカー前の）イスの上に巾着袋が置いてあって、グラブが乗っていたんだ。本当に冗談のつもりだったんだ」

左腕ローガンがバットを入れるケースのことを話していたら、イチローが即座に新品をプレゼントしたこともあった。

イチローを見て気付いたことはあるのか。

「毎日、誰よりもストレッチしている。たぶん、人々が一生をかけてストレッチする分を１日で超えてしまうんじゃないかな（笑い）。とにかく何一つ、ディテールを欠かない。全てのことが毎日同じなんだ。トレーニングも同じだし、試合前や後のささいなことも一緒だ。試合前にダッグアウトに置くバットの位置まで同じなんだよ」

チェンバレンにとってイチローは今でもヒーローだ。
