I was just looking for community like this. I wanted to write my diary before, but I couldn't. Because it is difficult for me to write only English, and then I guess I will not do this. As you know, I am a beginner of English. All the more, I never give up!
Hi! Middle defense is a presentation for a master degree in a middle term of a course, called "中間発表" in Japanese. And Final defense is a last presentation, "卒論発表" in Japanese!
Why we have to say "defense" is that audiences (usually professors) asks crucial questions for the presenters in order to check his/her achievements, and they have to "defense" to say that their research worth to graduate.
You will be sure to speak English if you continue to use it.
The difference between increase and escalate is that "escalate" is mostly used for bad situation while"increase" is used for both good and bad one.
Did your meeting hold only by voice? I mean, if you have chances to see mouths of speakers, you probably get words easier.
And I totally agree with you that Chinese English is awful to understand.
They tend to be confident of their pronaunciation, so it would not hardly be changed, unfortunately.
But you finished your report. That's nice! Congratulations!
About English:
Yes, English conversation school is efficient to some extent. However, I would like to say it is too expensive. There are other ways to talk others using English in Japan for free or at least very cheap!
For example, English coffee shops are convenient and easy to use.

Or if you are busy to go around, I suggest you to watch "Sesame Street" on DVD. I like it and I think it is easy to listen. Or I found an interesting web site. http://tubenglish.seesaa.net/ It is a listening drill using Youtube movies. They are so funny and questions are really good for improving our skill. I will use it for study.
Thank you for your advise.

Maybe, it is like "good work" or "nice work" something like that. However, I think "お疲れ様" contains more to it. I hope "お疲れ様" spread to the world as "otsukaresama"!
