We are pleased to announce the introduction of a pair of Eastern Quolls on exhibit in the nocturnal area. These short lived Dasyurids (life span of approx 5 years) are replacing our ageing Spotted Quoll.

Eastern Quolls are significant as they are presumed extinct on the mainland of Australia but still locally common in areas of Tasmania. The last confirmed sighting of the Eastern Quoll on the mainland of Australia was in Sydney suburb of Vaucluse in the early 1960s. They are now considered extinct on the mainland, although some recent sightings in the New England region of northern New South Wales suggest that the species may still survive. Prior to its rapid disappearance, this small possum-sized carnivorous marsupial ranged across much of south-eastern Australia.

Settlers spoke of this beautiful animal basking in the sun on stone walls and feasting on the introduced rabbits. Unfortunately an unknown disease decimated the population with isolated colonies hanging on for a few more decades before eventually disappearing. They are found in a variety of habitats including rainforest, heath land, alpine areas and scrub and feed on insects and small mammals.

Our display animals were breed at Secret Creek Sanctuary in Lithgow where they are part of a captive breeding program working towards reintroduction on areas of the mainland.
