Of course there is so much music available to us now so nobody in the band is stuck on any one kind of music. There is classical music that is amazing such as Khatchaturian and Debussy. There is great jazz from the United States in the middle of the unbelievable 20th century. There is British rock from the 60's. There is great modern pop music and rock and roll. (Vince)
The fans were incredibly great at the Fuji Rock festival. When we played it was downpouring, but the people stayed to listen to music. We were inspired by this gesture, and played to the crowd with genuine enthusiasm. We wanted to be as generous to the listeners as they were being to us. We love to play festivals because they are fun and exciting, but we believe we sound better in a tighter night-club type room. We look forward to the shows in Osaka and Tokyo at the Club Quattro. (Vince)
We have listened to The Carter Family, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Sr., Led Zeppelin, AC-DC, Sly and the Family Stone, and James Brown. The classic arrangement styles of 70's rock have influenced us a lot as well. (Vince)

Ok. Very funny. I think we'll answer about the ( ) on the bookshelf. Almost the whole band has read two authors, David Sedaris and Jared Diamond. David Sedaris writes hilarious stories about growing up in a peculiar family in the southern U. S. He has an outlook on life that is accurate, irreverent, and adaptive in a very humanly pragmatic way considering the circumstances that he finds himself in. Jared Diamond is an anthropologist who traces the development of civilization from it's very beginnings. Through his well-researched and relevant writing the reader is left to draw his own conclusions about why we are who we are. (Vince)
When we were in Japan for Fuji Rock we spent most of our time at the ski resort area. It was amazing how refreshing the water was right from the tap! The best meal was actually from a very small booth in the evening at the festival. Someone was grilling eel and it was delicious! In Tokyo we stayed in Shibuya. Something we all realize now is that a lot of the interesting stores are not clearly marked for foreigners. We know we must bravely look in the most unlikely of places for the things that are truly emblematic of the unique Japanese culture. (Vince)
We are feeling the love from the Japanese listeners. Thank-you!! Music to us is a universal expression. We love that we can establish a relationship with people from around the world who ordinarily we couldn't communicate with. Music is also a personal expression that is most appreciated when that expression is a feeling that is shared by many others. Music is a celebration too. Life is fortunate, so there is good reason to make a lot of noise about it. (Vince)
We don't know why we are appreciated by the Japanese, but we are very thankful for it. Japan is one of the best places on Earth. There is so much history, culture, and good food. The people have great customs and do everything with a lot of style. (Vince)
It is important to keep an eye open for cultural trends. Writing is more interesting when it reflects the current feeling of time in some way. There have been many great writers and musicians through the years. If you read and listen to as much as possible you become informed and able to communicate some things of your own. (Vince)
CAKE doesn't like gratuitous air travel. We think it is wrong. Flying to Japan--one of our favorite places--could never be gratuitous. We are so glad that our music could be of service to your wedding ritual. We try to make music that is all-purpose! (John)
I love a band from Brazil called, "Los Hermanos." I was able to meet them and talk about music on my visit there just a couple of weeks ago and I was taken by how much we musicians have in common throughout the world. (John)
Yes, we are! The valley in which we live is a dry place. It is flat and matte finish, as is the band CAKE. It is not a slick place, and in many ways it is depressing, practical, unembellished. I think these things can also be said about our music. See you in a few days!
We named the band for the English verb, which means -- to become formed into a compact or crusty mass: As temperatures dropped, the wet snow caked. This seemed to make sense to us at the time.
Our first show was somewhere in Sacramento a long time ago. I really don't remember it too well, but it included Vincent Di Fiore on trumpet, Gabe Nelson on bass, Frank French on drums, and Greg Brown on electric guitar. I was there as well. You are typing about CAKE while at work? Shame on you! (John)
I love Charles Bukowski, too, but I hate his legion of imitators. We only need one of him, thank you! I also really like John Banville, Beth Lisick, David Sedaris, Eugene Mirman, Mark Twain, Tom Tomorrow, Louis CK and David Rakoff. And many more... (John)
A 12 year old boy from Florida wrote to us asking us to play at his Bar Mitzvah. We decided we would call him and ask him about it. He freaked out when we told him we would be happy to play. It was such an interesting experience for everyone involved.(John)
There is no one way to make a song. Sometimes I write the words first, and sometimes I write the melody first. Every once in a while I even write them at the same time. I think the way to do it is to carry pen and paper with you AT ALL TIMES so that you never miss an idea. Sometimes ideas come at inconvenient moments, but you have to be ready for them anyway. It is more like fishing than anything else. (John)
I try to make bliss wherever I am, even when I am not supposed to feel it. That way, no matter what -- i win. If my car gets a flat tire with you in the back seat, we can still be happy if we decide to be happy. I also love riding my bicycle! (John)
Mount Fuji! I would love to go on a hike and look down on everything. Sacramento is a dry, flat agricultural valley that is starting to become more cosmopolitan, but is still very innocent/naive/ignorant. I love the Japanese people who I have met. They seem to have very sophisticated taste in music, art, culture. I have great faith in them. I hope that they will go through their current transitions with grace and ease. (John)
It will be a better show than Fuji Rock because CAKE loves to play small venues! Please have a good concert. One thing that I must always bring on tour is a good book to read. On this tour I will bring the new book by David Rakoff. Hopefully it will make me laugh while I wait around at the airport for hours and hours.
Vince and I choose most of the subjects for the CAKE site. We are very glad you find them amusing!
Well I believe musicians should be allowed to do our part whenever possible. Participation and communication regarding political issues is part of life. Everyone should find a way to help.
CAKE is and isn't evil, just like everything else. Everything in this world is a mixture. Enjoy the mixture.

「Candle in the windか?」と返しててウケたのを思い出しました。
