“Okinawa Ark” by Kanoko Sasaki

After the World War II, between the government and immigrated Okinawa people in the United States organized the special immigration program in order to rescue Okinawa people after the landing warfare with the US and Japan. Okinawa Ark is an exhibition consists of video and photo-installation about the Colonial de Okinawa in Bolivia. Kanako Sasaki visited Bolivia and documented individual stories from the past, including the war experiences also the contrast lifestyle of new generation. This is Japanese artist Kanako Sasaki’s first solo exhibition in South Florida.
Born in Sendai, Japan. Traveling and working on projects with lense-base media on-site or in studio, Kanako Sasaki earned her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2004 and her BA in Journalism from Ithaca College in 2001. She was selected for PDN’s 2006 30 Photographers to Watch. Dealing with narrative to deconstruct histories, time and memories, Sasaki explores her imagination by collaborating with local people's stories. Recently, premiered 'Okinawa Ark' in Tokyo for the Shiseido Art egg award. Sasaki has been in exhibitions in Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Austria, and the United States at venues including Gallery 10G in NY and MA2 gallery in Tokyo. Sasaki has participated in artist residencies at Bundeskanzleramt Kunst in Austria, Light Work in Syracuse , NY and other international residencies.
