NEC Announces Appointment of BSO Principal Trombonist Toby Oft to Faculty New England Conservatory announces the appointment of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's new principal trombonist Toby Oft to the faculty. He will begin his teaching duties in September 2009.
Oft assumed his BSO position in September 2008 after serving in the same capacity with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, from summer 2006. The son of music educators, he was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He started studying trombone with his father, Michael Oft, at the age of 6, and though he admits his inspiration in high school was jazz trombone, he shifted focus to classical trombone and orchestral study while in college. He received his B.M. degree from Indiana University and his M.M. from Northwestern University.
While a graduate student living in Evanston, Illinois, he was a successful freelancer in the greater Chicago area before winning his first full time job at Florida West Coast Symphony. Besides the principal position at that orchestra, Oft has also been Principal Trombone of the Buffalo Philharmonic.
