おもしろニッポン 01

Mamachari

One of the first things I noticed when I arrived in Japan, was the Mamachari.

The cute little "housewife" bicycle that everyone rides. Not only housewives.

In fact, I was really surprised when I started teaching in a Japanese junior high and high school.

I couldn't believe it! Every student had a Momochari. Every student!
Unbelievable.

Of course I went to a normal high school in the USA, where students ride
bicycles, but everyone has a "different" bicycle.

But in the Japanese school, all the students dress the same (uniform), and ride the same bicycles.

It's all about the "group".

Very interesting for me. Because I come from a country, where "individuality" is most important, and the group comes second.

Anyway, I've never ridden a Momochari.

I'm 185cm tall, so it's just to small for me.

I'm a little sad about that. LOL!

I like this sentences. Yeah, I think so. Individuality must be the most important in Japan.
I think everyone has good personality that no-one has it.

In this country Japan, we treasure "sekenntei"「世間体」.

It means we can not behave ashamedly.MY husband says every time
" It is embarrasse me. So I could not do that"

I always reply,
" It is not ashamed. If we do wrong,we must be punished. But we can do anything that we want to do, if it is different from the otehrs doing."

I had been saying to our children that we could do everthing if it was not wrong to do.It is my principle.

Yes, it was the same at the Jr high school where I worked.
Same uniform. Same Mamachari. Same Helmet.

Do you own thing! That's right. We should do what we like, as long as it doesn't hutr anyone else. Great idea.
