Do you think the trip to Japan will cause the Red Sox to get off to a slow start in the 2008 season? Any reaction from the players about this concern?

Of course there is some concern from manager Terry Francona and the players about the toll the trip might take on the team. That's only natural. But there is some recent history that suggests that this trip isn't a season-breaker. In 2000, the Mets went to Japan at the start of the season and wound up in the World Series that year. In 2004, the Yankees opened up in Japan and ended up three Mariano Rivera outs away from sweeping the Red Sox in the American League Championship Series. So of recent Japan entries, you have one pennant winner and another team that probably should have been a pennant winner.

It sounds like the Red Sox and agent Scott Boras will at least visit talks on an extension for Varitek during Spring Training. The club, Varitek and even Boras all realize how mutually beneficial this relationship has been over the years. And general manager Theo Epstein shares a good relationship with Boras, which should help matters even more.

Lowrie is definitely on the cusp of being ready for the Majors. I'd look to see him called up sometime in June or July, similar to the way Jacoby Ellsbury was eased in last season.

The safe thing to do would be to bring Mirabelli back. You know he can handle Tim Wakefield's knuckler. Then again, if the Sox were going to do that, wouldn't they have done it already? Cash is a decent option, but he's even less of an offensive threat than Mirabelli. It seems like they must have another iron in the fire as far as this goes, and that's why nothing has been resolved yet. Stay tuned.

I know the Red Sox are looking for some outfield depth, so why don't they just re-sign Bobby Kielty? The Red Sox really wanted to get him during the trade deadline last year. If they don't re-sign him, do you think Brandon Moss will get a chance to play this season?

Kielty is waiting to see what happens with Coco Crisp. If Crisp is traded, Kielty sees an opportunity for him to get a lot of at-bats. But if Coco does come back, that might be too big of a logjam for Kielty to get much playing time.

The Red Sox hold options on Ramirez in 2009 and '10, both of which are worth $20 million annually. If Ramirez bounces back from a somewhat ordinary year in 2007 and has a monster year in '08, he could leave the Red Sox with no choice but to either pick up his option or negotiate an extension. It's hard to picture this lineup without Ramirez.

The Red Sox definitely need additional bullpen depth, and they haven't been able to add anyone yet from another organization. Perhaps, Hansen will finally emerge this season. Hansen recently had surgery to correct sleep apnea, and the club is hopeful that his focus will be improved and he'll be more energized as a result.
