문화인류학자이자 전 삿포로(札幌) 대학 학장이었던 야마구치 마사오(山口昌男) 씨가 10일 오전 2시 24분, 폐렴으로 사망했다. 홋카이도(北海道) 출신. 장례식은 16일 오전 11일부터 도쿄도 후추시 아사마정(府中市浅間町)에서 열린다. 상주는 부인인 후사코(ふさこ) 씨다.
도쿄대학을 졸업한 뒤 도쿄도립대(현 수도대학 도쿄) 대학원에서 인류학을 공부했다. 시즈오카(静岡)현립대 교수와 해외 대학 강단에도 섰다. 도쿄외국어대 명예교수이기도 하다.
아프리카 등지에서의 현장 조사를 통해 제기한 ‘중심과 주변이론’ ‘트릭스타론’ 등 독자적인 문화이론으로 널리 알려졌다. 70~80년대 문화를 리드하며 ‘뉴 아카데미즘’ 붐을 일으켜 당시 젊은 연구자들의 지도적 존재로 각광을 받았다.

Influential anthropologist Masao Yamaguchi dies at 81
Famed anthropologist Masao Yamaguchi died of pneumonia at a hospital in Mitaka, western Tokyo, early Sunday. He was 81.
After graduating from the department of Japanese history at the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Letters, Yamaguchi studied anthropology at the graduate school of now-defunct Tokyo Metropolitan University.
He was head of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies’ Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa, and president of Sapporo University. He also taught at the University of Paris as a visiting professor.
He was among the 2011 Persons of Cultural Merit named by the government.
Yamaguchi is known for the center and periphery concept based on his fieldwork in Asia, Africa and other parts of the world, as well as his ethnological study on the role of tricksters.
He wrote many books, including “A Psychological History of Losers” and “Culture and Duality.”
Yamaguchi also had major influence in such fields as stage drama, movies and literature.
