One behalf of myself, the other darktrain.jp members, and the huge Underworld fan community here in Japan, we really appreciate your taking the time to answer these questions for us. All questions were submitted to darktrain.jp and the Underworld community on Mixi.jp during a one week period from July 27th to August 3rd. I know the fans, both in Japan and the rest of the world, will enjoy reading your responses to them.
1) (From Kahorin and Ako) Are you attracted to the Japanese culture? If so, what are some of your favorite aspects of the pop or artistic culture in Japan (e.g. anime, music, etc...). Has your work ever been inspired by Japanese culture?
2) (From Hana) From your point of view, what?s the difference between the atmosphere at your Japanese shows and the atmosphere at your shows in other countries?
3) (From Cylinder) You are both quite busy working on various Tomato projects, and at the same time, being members of Underworld - and all the things that come with that (e.g. writing music, recording, touring, doing interviews, etc...). How do you approach this multiple workload?
[Notes: In regards to question #3 - It seems that many Japanese fans don't fully understand the close relationship between Underworld and Tomato, but view them instead as two separate, but loosely related, entities. This information was communicated to me by my Japanese cohorts at Darktrain.jp. Perhaps your answer to this question will shed some more light on the unique working relationship that Underworld and Tomato have together.]
4) (From Keitaro) Why, after 2004, did you stop wearing conventional headphones during your live shows and change to using earphones?
5) (From Chino) Over the years, you have often used samples of Japanese phrases in your songs as well as in your live shows. What was/is the inspiration for this?
6) (From Shingo) Who did the voice/spoken part at the end of King of Snake ? the part that sounds like Japanese broken English?
7) (From Michie) As we know, Karl usually writes the lyrics to Underworld songs and Rick writes the music. There is a rumor that Rick wrote the lyrics for Luetin. If this is true, this appears different from the "normal" way you two approach your music. Did you intend to make music in this unusual way? Was Karl influenced by Ricks approach to writing lyrics?
8) (From TSK) "No Fear" is written on the back of Karl's guitar. What significance does it have, if any?
9) (From Kentaro) You have supported and promoted the Meridian Trust for some time, and just recently it was announced that you will donate a song for an album entitled, 'Songs for Tibet - The Art of Peace'. How did you become involved in the "Free Tibet" project?
10) (From Skip) Do you have any plans to sell the "Book of Jam" in physical form at some point in the future?
11) (From Kenichiro) Back in November 2007, you streamed the Oblivion Ball live on UnderworldLive.com. Do you have any plans to do this again with other shows in the future? Could they be streamed in high quality, even if it means that we have to pay to watch them.
12) (From launen and pontyuru) Most of your Japanese fans sincerely look forward to a sequel to "Everything Everything". Do you have any plans to release another "live" album/dvd?
13) (From Aries) What is the name of the (now famous) dalmatian that has appeared so often in your promotional pictures, and even made some guest appearances in your Lemonworld video broadcasts?
14) (From Matt) These final questions are for Danielle Short. What is it like being Underworld?s press manager? How and when did you get started doing this? With such a busy schedule managing the band, what do you do to relax in your free time? Perhaps you could share an interesting or funny story with the fans about your trip to Japan this summer.
