ブリスベン〜BrisVegasコミュのJust some questions about Osaka!!!

Not sure if anyone remembers, but back just before November I posted a thread asking for suggestions for places to go in my three-day holiday in Tokyo. Last time I went with some friends, one of which is Japanese, and really had a good time!

As I loved Japan so much, I've decided to go back, this time by myself! This time I've decided to stay in Kyoto and visit Osaka almost daily. I'll be staying from the 1st to the 7th of July. One of my friends will be hosting me for a few days in Kyoto, but she has to study full time at university.

The other couple days I'll find my own accommodation in Osaka.

So, I was thinking, due to the feedback I still appreciate to this day from last time, I was wondering if some of you could recommend me some places to visit around Kyoto/Osaka, considering that this time, I will be by myself the majority of my holiday.

Many thanks!

Also, I was hoping that some people could suggest me some places to go in Osaka where it's easy to socialise with the locals, perhaps some bars? I went to a few bars when I was in Tokyo and made a couple friends, but the bars were a little bit too 'posh' for my liking, probably because it was in Ginza.

If anyone knows of any festivals around that time too, please let me know :)
Hello. I am japanese student who lives in Brisbane. In my experience,

"Nanba" and "Shinsekai" is the best place where to experience the locals.

There are lot Japanese style bar and price is cheaper than Ginza.

Nice to meet you. I hope you are enjoying your stay in Brisbane mate! Just to clarify, as I noted before, I hoped to meet locals, however I don't exaclty wish to go to a 'Roppongi' style of place. Of course I'm going to Japan for Japan and its' people, not people from all over the world, we have that here in Australia as you're all aware ^^

I didn't realise until after my holiday that Ginza was one of the most expensive places in Japan for practically anything. Least I can now say that I've stayed there. Heh.

I'm so sorry, my explanation was bad.

"Shinsekai" is name of area where is in Osaka. It has been loved by

local people for long time. there are only local people, 99% sure.

And generally, the people who lives in around there calls "Tsutenkaku"

http://www.shinsekai.ne.jp/ this is the homepage which is about

"Shinsekai". And you can show in Japanese also English.

Hello.
I know one nice and cheap bar in Nanba.
All matini is just 500 yen.
It's an international bar. So, most Japanese can speak English there.
So, you will enjoy=)
I think weekend is better to go there.
This is the website.

You will find other nice places from this site,
Have a good trip!
Thanks Riko, but I think I'll try to find a bar with less influence of Westerners. Just, here in Brisbane, we already have lots of international bars, so I'm looking for something different to what I have seen in Brisbane.
Oh, another question. I will be giving my friend's parents some gifts for their hospitality in the form of alcohol and probably some Australian produce.

I believe Japan is considerably lax compared to Australia's customs laws (from what I heard and personal experience). But I thought I'd clarify it first.

Bringing in alcohol (as long as it's not excessive) shouldn't be a problem, right? Furthermore, I'll probably be bringing in macadamias (packed commercially) and other goodies. Is there anything special that Japan doesn't allow that I should be aware of? Sometimes things aren't noted until I get there and the last thing I want is problems with customs.
Hey Trent

It's nice to see someone around my age traveling to Japan :)
(I hope ur 18 like how it saids on ur profile lol)

I don't want you to fully rely on the information I'm going to post, but I hope u can reference something out of it

Firstly, I dunno of any bars around Osaka/Kyoto area sorry :(
But if u r going to a bar around Saitama/Tokyo area, ask me bro :D lol

And just like to give u a heads up if u r going to Kansai Airport from Goldie by Jetstar
Becoz I just visited Japan (to Narita Airport) a month ago and I was told that any of the alcohol purchased from Gold Coast airport couldn't be taken to Kansai Airport for some stupid custom's reasons.
I'm not exactly sure what the deal would b if u r takin alcohol by ur suitcase but I'm positive that u can't take alcohol by ur hand luggage.
(I;m sure it'll b fine as long as if its your suit case tho)
It's not a big deal if u r going to Narita airport but there are a few things that u have to watch out for if your going to Kansai airport (which I would assume for u to use since you are visiting to Kyoto/Osaka).

But otherwise, Japanese customs r fully more easy about it.
I'm sure whatever your taking will b all fine
Just watch out if you are thinking to buy alcohol from the airport :)

Peace - Reeohh
I'll probably just buy some alcohol and place it within my checked baggage then, if it's a problem ^^

Yeah, I am 18. This coming holiday is of significant important for me you see, this is as if all goes well and I still feel as if I could live in Japan, I'll probably apply to study for a semester in Japan next year.

I highly doubt that I will be disappointed during my holiday, I sure as hell wasn't last time!I just hope that health insurance for overseas students in Japan and the like isn't too expensive. However, I'll sort that out all in due time.

Just letting you know Reeohh, I'm a big fan of melodic death metal. Listening to In Flames as we speak ;)

Any other tips or advice, as always, would be greatly appreciated.
yeah? u can study in japan??
that would b sick dude!
im plannin to do that in my 2nd year of uni :)

well i hope u have a really nice trip dude :)
your planning ahead so it'll b pretty awesome i assume lol :D
Yeah, because I'll still be able to claim youth allowance and living away from home allowance whilst I'm studying in Japan. That will cover a significant portion of my expenses. Furthermore, it appears as if since it's exchange, I don't have to pay for homestay, which is pretty cool.

I'm just wondering how much the visa application and insurance will set me back though...

But, I'll worry about that when the right time comes. I can't start getting youth allowance until May anyways. Supporting yourself whilst studying sucks, so it'll help me out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On another note, since I'll be by myself the majority of the time. Does anyone know of any particular shrines or local attractions (to Kyoto/Osaka) that they would recommend? I won't spend my entire holiday drinking, haha.

Someone noted earlier about 'Shinsekai', anyone been there before?

Sorry about all my questions, I just want to enjoy my holiday as much as I can. :)
Hey guys, I'm back again. Just wondering about accommodation in Osaka. I'm cool to stay at my friend's place for 5 nights, and I plan on staying in Osaka (hotel, not hostel or motel), for 2 nights. I checked 'wotif' (wotif.com) and they have some pretty good rates for decent hotels around the end of June (about 6000-8000yen a night for Osaka). However, I have to stay there a minimum of 3 nights.

I'm just wondering, in Osaka, if I try to book a hotel whilst I'm over in Japan, do you think it'd be a lot more expensive than booking well in advance? I'm not sure how it works over there and if those prices are reasonable for Osaka. I don't want to not book any hotels, and realise I have to fork out $200+ a night for a standard room when I could've got it a lot cheaper beforehand.

Thanks in advance.
I found a really good website with cheap rooms, so I'll probably pay in advance. Some of them offer to pay when you arrive, which is pretty good too. The website is: http://travel.rakuten.co.jp/en/index.html

Lucky my friend suggested this website!

Hoping for some recommendations for some things to do during the day and night (mainly drinking places for night) in Osaka/Kyoto. Many thanks as always guys. I feel a bit bad about asking so much from strangers, so if there's anything I can tell you in return about my country, I'd be glad to do so :)
Hello, where my hometown is in the middle of Kyoto and Osaka called Takatsuki 7 stops away from Osaka station. any alcohole is cheaper than either Osaka and kyoto, and also not really influenced. Just make sure that noone speak english. For further information, send me a message
I live in Brisbane anyway.
Thanks for the information! But I'm worried that I might get a bit lost if I'm stuck inbetween the two cities that I'll be staying in, especially if I'm there at night.

How long does the trains run between Osaka-Kyoto or vice verca at night? I was suprised to see the inner city trains in Tokyo stop around 12, I thought it might be 24 hour services.
That should be same as Tokyo, will be stopped around 12:30. You need to catch a tax if you miss, either no more bus. Fortunatelly, the train runs between two cities straight away, bring you to the city, it takes about 40 min, it is good idea that you stay in Takatsuki which is middle between 2 cities, takes20 min each to get to the cities, so that you will be able to drink as much as you like hopely, moreover, Business hotel is cheaper than the city cost you about 5000yen for a night, also many bar with friendly staff
However, I will be in Takatsuki in July, send me a message if you lost, I may be able to help you a bit. i will be drinking at some bar down there.
Hey guys, sorry to bring the post back to the top, but I've got a couple updates.

I'll be in Kansai from July one, and I'm going to stay at my friend's house in Kyoto from the 1-4, and I'll stay in Hotel New Hankyu from the 4th-7th.

I still have no idea what to do in my holiday. In Tokyo it was easy, just visit Asakusa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Disneyland etc. However, I don't know about Osaka (and Kyoto) as well as Tokyo. Since I'll be by myself the majority of my holiday, I don't want to do things that would make me look silly doing by myself (like going to Universal Studios).

And if anyone could recommend any restaurants/bars or maybe karaoke places (incase I go out karaoke with my friend from Kyoto), please recommend them too!

Also, I'm going to be (90% sure) studying in Kansai Gaidei Gaikou Daigaku from the beginning of next year on exchange, my university (QUT) has a partnership with it. So if you know anything about the university. please tell me too!

Thank you so much, and sorry to disturb you again...
