BULLISH LUCK Hong Kong's Horse of the Year last season with resounding wins in final two legs of Asian Mile Challenge; has been Hong Kong's best miler for two seasons although he never loomed a threat when 4th in this race last year. Was also unlucky not to win the CXHK Cup in 2004. Caught the eye in 6th in the CX International Mile Trial recently after a brief layoff. Races held up in rear for a strong kick home, best on fast ground; blinkered.
RAMONTI High class Italian colt, never out of the quinella in 11 runs at home. Won Italian 2000 Guineas (Gr.2-1600m) last year and a head 2nd in Italian Derby (Gr.1-2400m). Improved again this year and very impressive mile wins at Gr.1 and Gr.2 level latest. Well beaten on sole start outside Italy (reportedly not suited by the Deauville straight mile). Always leads, copes with any ground.
MUSTAMEET Classy performer. Better than ever this year winning five black-type races from 1600m to 2000m. Best effort when easily winning four-runner Gr.2 Royal Whip Stks at The Curragh by 3Ls from a Gr.1 winner. Never threatened when 4th in sole Gr.1 start, the Irish Champion Stakes, latest and overall form may be just short of the highest level. Races held up, acts on any surface.
JOYFUL WINNER Massive improvement last term to leap from Class 2 to Gr.1 winner; defeated Silent Witness in HK Gr.1 Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) and twice ran a highly creditable 3rd to Bullish Luck in the G1 Champions Mile and G1 Yasuda Kinen. Clearly below that high standard this term after two relatively unremarkable efforts; best on fast ground; races held up to unleash a powerful turn of foot when on song.
RUSSIAN PEARL Very talented Gr.1 winning miler both in NZ and HK but restricted to just 12 starts in over two years owing to recurring tendon and suspensory injuries. Shares track record for the Sha Tin 1800m; ran 2nd and 3rd MBHK Derby and APQEII Cup in 2005. Absent for eight months before excellent 4th in last year's CXHK Cup so a little better prepared this time around following a non-threatening bid in the CX International Mile Trial on Nov 19. Settles off the pace, best on top of the ground.
SATCHEM Lightly raced 4yo; has not finished out of the frame in five starts this year from Listed to Gr.2 level. Twice finished a close 3rd to Sleeping Indian recently, form franked by the latter's 4th (unlucky not be closer) in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile. Off the track for over 13 months after only prior attempt in this grade, a respectable 9th of 19 at 40/1 in last year's 2000 Guineas. No reason why he can't improve further. Settles in midfield, acts on any surface, genuine, tongue-tied.
ARMADA Hong Kong's Most Improved Horse last season after six wins from six starts from 1200m to 1600m. Very encouraging effort over too short a trip (1200m) on reappearance when 4th beaten 1.5Ls behind top sprinters and confirmed that impression with a cosy 0.8L win in CX International Mile Trial. Has been prepared to peak for this occasion and appears as HK's best contender here. Races prominently to midfield; has won on wet and fast tracks.
REBEL REBEL Best known for running 2nd at 100/1 in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket last year and sold to the US after a well-beaten 4th in the Irish equivalent. Two wins from 10 starts in North America, both on the Belmont Park turf mile and one at Gr.3 level. Has not failed to place in four runs at 1600m and runner-up to CXHK Mile rival Becrux in the Woodbine Mile (Gr.1). Ridden patiently nowadays and best on fast ground. Blinkered.
BECRUX Listed winner as a juvenile in Italy, later flopped in both UAE Guineas and Derby. Won twice from nine starts in USA where his best black-type effort was 3rd in a Listed event. Much better since being gelded this year and best efforts in Canada of late: 2nd in a Gr.2 at 1400m and lifted the Woodbine Mile (Gr.1) by a neck with dual British Gr.1 winner Ad Valorem back in 3rd. Best on fast ground over a mile when settling midfield or better.
BOWMAN'S CROSSING Grand servant with over HK$19.4m in stakes but winless since January 2003; close 2nd in 2003 CXHK Mile and twice 3rd in Gr.1 SAI Cup (2000m) at Kranji; mixed form over past two seasons: ran last in 2004 CXHK Cup but later 4th in the 2005 G1 Champions Mile. Has raced well for current trainer and still holding his own at this level despite age. Acts on any ground; races in midfield or further back.
THE DUKE High class miler and still at the top of his game after over 50 runs; ran 3rd in this race in 2004 and runner-up last year. Last two runs have been very good, twice second though comfortably held latest by Mile rival Armada in CX International Mile Trial. Obviously very consistent and genuine but always seems to find one better – has landed just won of his last 21 outings. Led last start and usually close to the pace, best on top of the ground.
FLORAL PEGASUS Easy win in Class 3 at this meeting last year hinted at an ability to cope with this level and hard to fault his rise since. Won his first two this term and dispelled stamina doubts with a battling 3rd in the CX International Trial last time even if he probably needs to improve again to figure here. Leads or races close-up and acts on fast ground (has also won on dirt).
SIR ERNESTO Has made consistent if steady progress to current level but recently in best-ever form given his former tendency to over-race seems a thing of the past. Won twice over a mile in fast times prior to his 4th in the CX International Mile Trial, quickening the tempo to lead 700m out and headed at the 300m. Still needs to improve again to take a hand here. Prefers to lead or race close up; best on fast ground.
DANCE IN THE MOOD Finished 13th in the CXHK Cup as a 3yo but this former Japanese 1,000 Guineas winner has rediscovered her groove this term, ending a two-year losing streak. Won a filly/mare Gr.1 mile in Japan and later added a Gr.3 over same trip in the USA either side of a creditable 5th to Bullish Luck in the G1 Yasuda Kinen; didn’t see out the G1 Tenno Sho distance, but back to best to run Daiwa Major to a neck in the G1 Mile Championship. Comes from around midfield and best on quick ground.
