10-foot user interface From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Ten things you may not know about Wikipedia • Jump to: navigation, search
A 10-foot user interface is a user interface for a television set or a similarly sized screen. "10 foot" refers to the approximate distance from the viewer to the screen, which can be shorter or longer than 10 feet (which is about 3 m) depending on the size of the screen. Such interfaces have large menus and buttons that are also designed to be navigated by a hand-held remote control. Examples are electronic program guides, Apple's Front Row, Xbox Media Center, and the Microsoft Windows Media Center interface. This technology-related article is a stub. We’ve been interested in “10-foot UI” design for awhile now, as it brings issues of usability, simplicity, and enjoyment to the forefront of the thought process. It also merges elements of video game design with the ultimate consumer experience - sitting on your couch and watching tv (hence our codename “potato”). Finally, more and more people have a PC (or MacMini) in their living room, wired up to their fancy flatscreen/HD/plasma/projector displays, and they need great experiences and content to take advantage of that
