I reading a book which is "The Purpose Driven Life". Recently's section was make best friend with God and praying. I start praying recently,but I don't know how to...so I always pray"What was happened today.","Appreciation to God.",and before sleep. Two days ago I talked with my Engish teacher who is protestant. He said to me"It's good. Before sleep is common time to pray." Anyway I thoguht I should keep prayin even I don't know how or what's purpose...
I'd like to ask you some question. -Do you pray every day? -How do you pray? -Where do you pray? -What can I say to other people which likes"Thanksgiving words"?
Please answer those questions... God bless you...(I know only this sentence.)
Hi Meg. Well, I don't know if there is any special way to pray. Sometimes, when I lie in bed and have trouble sleeping, I talk to God, ask him guidance, thank him for all that is good, ask for forgiveness for my sins, to help me through rough times or just talk. Even when I'm in nature, I don't do my sigh of the cross, I just say to God, wow there is proof that you are everywhere in creation, thanks for all of these wonders.
But if you want to do the conventional way, you can bow down your head, put your hands together and cite out loud or in your mind "Our Father"
Heres the most traditional prayer that many Chrisians love to say the most
Our Father
The prayer which Jesus Christ taught to His disciples.
Traditional version:
Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name;
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Newer version:
Our Father, Who is in heaven,
Holy is Your Name;
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
The Our Father is based on these passages from the Bible:
Thank you for told me some phrase.
I have a question.
"Our Father
The prayer which Jesus Christ taught to His disciples."
This part is when person pray,do they pray at first this phrase then pray Traditional version or Newer version?
Well, I usually read the Bible at night time (puts me to sleep..) hahaha just kidding.. And then I pray in the morning mostly, I find it is better to pray in the morning. It's starting the day off right I feel.
Hmm, when I pray though.. I usually think about any prayer requests that I have been told, then if I am struggling with something in my life I will ask God to get me though it. Then in general I pray for guidence for that day, that the Holy Spirit might be upon me and I might live out the fruits of the Spirit that day. Then for strength and boldness to not be afraid to speak up about God/Jesus if the opportunity arises.
It really just depends what I am going through at that time, and what I hope God will do in my life and through my life.
Meg, some people just use prayer as time to be quiet. There is a verse which says "Be still and know that I am God" sometimes prayer could just be silent meditation, in a quiet place before the Creator not really saying much, but just reflecting upon God and all His love, mercy and glory. Sometimes prayer is time for us to just shut up and listen to what God has to say to us.
ah, No big issue, but it is typically referred to, in English, as 'The Lord's Prayer' (meaning, in this case, Jesus. In Latin, the it is usually referred to as 'Pater Noster', which means 'Our Father' and is a allusion to the first line. I think you just had the two uses confused: )
Meg: I use the old version, since i learned it that way as part of the liturgy: )
Yep, both formally (spoken out-loud prayer) and informally whenever prompted or needed). I wish I practiced lectio divina more though... Actually , look up 'lectio divina' on the internet--i think you will find it interesting.
-How do you pray?
both formally (set prayers, and those formally spoken), and bare, conversational-style prayer. Much of this depends on context.
-Where do you pray?
Anywhere is fine. But formal prayers usually have a specific context in which they are to take place
-What can I say to other people which likes"Thanksgiving words"
oh, do you mean some other commonly used words and ways of speaking by christians? If so, i know a book that has the japanese and english equivalents such words and phrases, and can tell you about it, if you want. Or do you mean something else?
Thank you for many comments.
