Neil Youngにとって4枚目のSolo Albumにあたるこの作品は、Crosby, Stills, Nash & Youngの解散、最初の妻との離婚、持病となるDisc Herniation(椎間板ヘルニア)の発覚など、彼にとって大きな変化の時期に制作されました。心機一転という意味合いもあったのか、前作/前々作を共にしたCrazy Horseとは一旦離れ、Johnny CashのTV番組(Johnny Cash Show)出演のために訪れたNashvilleで出会った新しいMusicians達(Ben Keith/Tim Drummond)とのCollaborationとなり、Recording場所にもNashvilleやLondonが選ばれています。10曲中7曲はCountryの聖地Nashvilleでの録音。NashvilleのMusiciansである[Ben Keith/Tim Drummond/Kenny Buttrey]の三人に旧友Jack Nitzscheを加えた即席Back Band、The Stray GatorsがBackを務めています。当然ながらCountry風味の演奏になっており、EngineerもCountryを得意とするElliot Mazerです。こうしたことからこのAlbumはNeil Youngが(Countryに挑戦したAlbum)という受け取られ方をすることが多く、大Hitしたにもかかわらず、Countryを保守的な音楽として敬遠する人や、Neil Youngの魅力を暴力的なElectric Guitarにのみ求めるFanからはあまり評判がよくないようです。これらの曲から聴こえてくるのは、Country Musicの安心感に身を委ねたいと強く願いながらも、決してCountryになりきれないNeil Youngの深い孤独/苦悩であり、このAlbumほどNeil Youngらしさというものを感じさせる作品もないのではないでしょうか。それにしてもこのAlbumは暗い。離婚直後の制作ということでうなずけるのですが、(Out On The Weekend)から人間不信の嵐が吹き荒れます。それでも[黄金の心を探し続けていたい]と歌われる(Heart Of Gold)は名曲だと思います。[土の中を掘り返して黄金の心を掘り当てる]という比喩は(Find The Cost Of Freedom/After The Gold Rush)との連続性を強く想起させます。(Heart Of Gold)はU.S. Billboard Hot 100で1位になりました。Neil Youngの曲が1位になるなんて...The Stray GatorsがBackを務める曲では、Neil自身のHarmonicaとBen KeithのPedal Steel GuitarがSoundの中心となっています。数少ない音でものすごく深い表現をしてしまうBen KeithはLAにはいないTypeのSteel Guitar Playerです。このAlbumではNeil YoungのElectric Guitarはほとんど出てきません。彼のGuitarが炸裂するのは(Alabama/Words)です。しかし、彼にしては控え目な演奏で、攻撃的というよりは内面に向かって深く沈んでいくような沈痛なSoundが印象的です。それがこれらの楽曲での怒り/迷いをより的確に表現しています。前者はRacial discrimination in southern USA(アメリカ南部の人種差別)を非難した曲、後者は(歌う)という行為への迷いと決意を表明した曲です。Stray Gators絡みの楽曲には、Backing VocalsにLinda Ronstadt、James Taylor、David Crosby、Stephen Stills 、Graham Nashという錚々たるMemberが参加しています。＊加筆
