The Best Led Zeppelin Bootlegs - A Guide for New Collectors
-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some categorized recommendations for those who don't know where to go next in collecting Led Zeppelin bootlegs. In compiling this list, priority goes to bootlegs that offer complete, or nearly complete recordings of shows, are reasonably good quality recordings, are of exceptional performances, or have some notable historical significance either as classic bootlegs or records of historically significant performances.

------------------------------------------------------------

My Must-Haves:

These bootlegs offer a sampling of what I think are the best sounding and highest quality complete performances from all their different eras.

SBD 1969.04.27 San Francisco, Fillmore West - "Collage," "Jimi Page Experience" and "The Devil's Blues" use the AUD to fill the gaps of the SBD. "The Devil's Blues" is a DVD with video clips from 1969 performances imposed over the audio. Great quality recording of one of their best ever shows. See the classic bootlegs section below.

SBD 1969.08.31 Dallas - Some video footage exists. "Texas Pop" is a DVD with two SBD quality versions of this show. Great quality recording of a great show.

AUD 1970.03.07 Montreux, Switzerland - The SBD is inferior to the very good AUD recording, but the best versions use the SBD to fill the gaps in the AUD.

AUD 1970.09.19 New York City, Madison Square Garden - Evening Show - Get the 2005 Presence remaster of "One More for the Road." Encores include some of Gallows Pole in the Communication Breakdown medley and one of the two recordings of a complete Out on the Tiles.

SBD 1971.04.01 London BBC - The official release is heavily edited. The Pre-FM Master recording includes the entire performance. See the classic bootlegs list below.

AUD 1971.09.29 Osaka, Japan - Only performace of Friends. Numerous sources for this great show circulate. Check http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm for information about the use of these different sources on the multitude of bootlegs of this show. See the Japanese Tours and classic bootlegs lists below.

AUD 1972.06.25 Inglewood, LA Forum - Some of this show is on How the West Was Won.

AUD 1972.10.02 Tokyo, Japan - See the first and lasts and Japanese tours lists below.

AUD 1973.03.24 Offenburg, Germany - Get the 2nd gen. recording. See the section below on the Spring 1973 European tour, and the classic bootlegs list.

AUD 1973.06.02 San Francisco - Get the pitch corrected version. An incomplete SBD circulates. See the classic bootlegs list below.

MAT 1975.02.12 New York City, Madison Square Garden - Get the bluecongo matrix "Four Blocks in the Snow" and both the SBD and AUD recordings as well! See the classic bootlegs list below

SBD 1975.05.25 London, Earl's Court - Get "When We Were Kings" (SBD with AUD fills), or the bluecongo SBD/AUD matrix "King Jimmy." Video of the first 55 minutes of this show is readily available. See the Earl's Court section below.

SBD 1977.05.26 Landover - Get "Bringing the House Down"(SBD with AUD fills), or Slumpy's SBD/AUD matrix "Matrixing Maryland" if you find the SBD to be too dry.

AUD 1977.06.21 Inglewood, LA Forum - The most revered of Mike Millard's recordings, both for its outstanding sound quality, and for the band's great performance overall. Get the Winston Remaster. See the classic bootlegs and Mike "the Mike" Millard sections below.

MAT 1979.08.04 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - Get the Winston Remaster SBD/AUD Matrix, and also get the Watchtower release of the SBD. A nearly complete video is also available. See the video and classic bootleg sections below.

MAT 1980.06.29 Zurich, Switzerland - I recommend getting the bluecongo SBD/AUD Matrix The European Championships, though the
SBD and AUD recordings are readily available. See the classic bootlegs section below.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Honorable Mentions:

These are additional balanced options to complement the main picks.

AUD 1969.04.24 San Francisco, Fillmore West - Miked from the stage; sounds absolutely incredible--probably the best ambient recording of the band ever. Great show; the band plays through some major technical glitches with Jones's bass rig. Get the version of this show JamesKG mastered from Ajd's PCM source: "Dancing Avocado Supreme AJD / JAMESKG 2005 Complete PCM Master Transfer."

AUD 1970.09.04 Inglewood, LA Forum - The most famous Led Zeppelin bootleg: "Live on Blueberry Hill," named on account of the final encore of this classic show. Numerous recordings of this show now circulate. See the classic bootlegs list below for some help in sorting the versions out. See also the rare performances of LZ songs list.

AUD 1971.08.07 Montreux - A short and energetic performance where the band get over the disaster in Italy (see the infamous shows list below) and get ready to tour America again. The recording quality is not great, but Plant's voice is clearly in incredible form. Get the JamesKG release of this show with both the raw source, and a wonderful remastering. See the historically significant shows list.

SBD 1971.08.31 Orlando - Gaps in SBD filled by AUD recording.

SBD 1973.07.29 New York City, Madison Square Garden - Much of the version of Since I've Been Loving You from "The Song Remains the Same" is from this night. Gaps in SBD filled by AUD recording. Get the Garden Tapes vol. III edition.

SBD 1975.02.16 St. Louis - Newly released, outstanding quality, complete SBD of a good performance.

AUD 1975.03.21 Seattle - A decent recording of a very good, and very long performance.

AUD 1977.04.28 Cleveland - Get the Presence Production.

AUD 1977.06.27 Inglewood, LA Forum - A nice contrast to 1977.06.21 as this performance is a bit more loose. Get the Master>VHS>DAT version if you prefer low gen, or get "Deep Striker." See the section below on Mike Millard's recordings, and the two other Millard recordings in the classic bootleg section.

AUD 1979.07.24 Copenhagen, Denmark - The second warm-up for the Knebworth Festival performance. Get the Master>DAT version over the TDOLZ version. See the classic bootlegs list below.

SBD 1980.06.30 Frankfurt, Germany - Perhaps the best performance of the 1980 Tour Over Europe. Get the 1st gen source.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Historically Significant Shows:

Firsts and Lasts:
Get these shows, especially the Bath, Wembley and Seattle shows, and you are well on your way to being a "completist."

AUD 1968.12.30 Spokane - Earliest live recording, great show. Get the ZD or EV versions. See the classic bootlegs section below.

SBD 1969.01.11 San Francisco, Fillmore West - Earliest soundboard, great show. Get the Master>DAT source to avoid the damaging EQ of most bootleg releases of this great performance.

AUD 1969.01.26 Boston, Boston Tea Party - All that circulates is the first hour and a half of this legendary four and a half hour show. Numerous bootlegs of this show circulate, and also a 1st gen source.

AUD 1969.04.26 San Francisco, Winterland Ballroom - Earliest version of Whole Lotta Love, great show. Get Dadgad's speed corrected version. See the classic bootlegs section below.

AUD 1969.10.12 London, Lyceum - First live performances of Heartbreaker and What Is and What Should Never Be. Get the 1st Gen>DAT source. See the classic bootlegs section below.

AUD 1970.01.08 Bristol - Earliest Since I've Been Loving You.

AUD 1970.06.28 Shepton Mallet, Bath Festival - Bad, incomplete recording of a classic show; earliest Immigrant Song, That's the Way. Get the Dadgad remaster.

AUD 1971.03.05 Belfast - First Rock and Roll, Black Dog, Going to California, and Starway to Heaven, but tape is munched in the STH solo. Get the Master Cassette > CDR version. Avoid EV's "Black Velvet" since the gap in STH was patched from the next night.

AUD 1971.05.03 Copenhagen - Earliest recording of Misty Mountain Hop; rare performance of Gallows Pole; only known performance of Four Sticks. Get Previews and Novelties or the Master>DAT (index click corrected) version.

AUD 1971.08.07 Montreux - Earliest recording of Celebration Day; also earliest recording of Weekend. See the honorable mentions list above.

AUD 1971.11.20 London, Wembley Empire Pool - First Dancing Days. Bad recording of a great performance. A low gen source circulates; make sure it has Dancing Days.

AUD 1972.06.19 Seattle - Not a good recording, but a great performance. First Ocean, Over the Hills and Far Away, Black Country Woman; Dancing Days performed twice.

AUD 1972.10.02 Tokyo, Japan - First The Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song. See the must-haves list and the Japanese tour section.

AUD 1977.07.24 Oakland - Last US show, and overall not a good performance. See the classic bootlegs section below.

SBD 1979.08.11 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - The lesser of the two Knebworth performances, but it's their last UK show. See the video and classic bootlegs sections below.

SBD 1980.07.07 Berlin, Germany - Bonzo's last show. SBD, AUD and MAT versions of this show circulate I recommend the SBD. See the classic bootlegs section below.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Best Sources for Rare Performances of LZ Songs:

AUD 1970.09.04 Inglewood, LA Forum - Good Times Bad Times, Out on the Tiles

AUD 1971.05.03 Copenhagen, Denmark - Four Sticks, Gallows Pole

AUD 1971.09.29 Osaka, Festival Hall - Friends

AUD 1975.01.12 Brussels, Belgium - When the Levee Breaks, Wanton Song

AUD 1975.03.11 Long Beach - The Crunge

--------------------------------------------------------------

Though not a concert performance, a soundcheck recording offers some loose and sloppy performances of songs never otherwise performed live:

SBD 1973.07.06 Chicago - Sound Check - The Rover, Night Flight.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Classic Tours and Shows:

Japan 1971 and 1972:
It is worthwhile to get all the shows from the two Japanese tours. Complete versions of all the Japanese shows are readily available, and are generally of very good quality. The 1971 tour is marked by very loose acoustic sets and oldies medleys with lots of rare song selections:

AUD 1971.09.23 Tokyo, Budokan Hall - WLL includes one of the most complete version of Good Times Bad Times available.

AUD 1971.09.24 Tokyo, Budokan Hall - WLL includes a bit of the almost never played Your Time is Gonna Come.

AUD 1971.09.27 Hiroshima

AUD 1971.09.28 Osaka, Festival Hall - Plantations include lines from Please Please Me and From Me To You; acoustic set includes We Shall Overcome and Down By The Riverside; encores include High Heeled Sneakers.

AUD 1971.09.29 Osaka, Festival Hall - Includes lines from Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and the only known performance of Friends.

The 1972 Japanese tour shows are short, but generally great performances including interesting WLL medleys:

AUD 1972.10.02 Tokyo, Budokan Hall - WLL includes Killing Floor, I Can't Quit You Baby and You Shook Me.

AUD 1972.10.03 Tokyo, Budokan Hall

AUD 1972.10.04 Osaka, Festival Hall

AUD 1972.10.05 Nagoya

AUD 1972.10.09 Osaka, Festival Hall - Encores include Stand By Me.

AUD 1972.10.10 Kyoto

---------------------------------------------------------

Europe 1973:

Shows from the European tour of spring 1973 are generally regarded as among the finest of Led Zeppelin's performances. Great performances can be found in some of the incomplete or lower quality recordings from this tour. These are, on the whole, the best recordings:

AUD 1973.03.16 Vienna, Austria - The Winston Remaster includes an AUD/SBD matrix of some tracks.

AUD 1973.03.17 Munich, Germany

AUD 1973.03.19 Berlin, Germany - A SBD fragment of Whole Lotta Love is available.

AUD 1973.03.22 Essen, Germany - Get the Winston Remaster which makes use of some SBD fragments.

AUD 1973.03.24 Offenburg, Germany - Get the 2nd gen. source.

----------------------------------------------------------

Earl's Court 1975:

The series of shows at Earl's Court Arena in London are legendary. Complete versions of all these shows are readily available. Check the Title Comparisons at http://www.bootledz.com/7580.htm for information about differences among the various versions of these shows:

AUD 1975.05.17 London, Earl's Court Arena

AUD 1975.05.18 London, Earl's Court Arena - This show was the source of the rare classic bootleg "No Quarter."

AUD 1975.05.23 London, Earl's Court Arena - Complete video of this show probably exists, but does not circulate.

SBD 1975.05.24 London, Earl's Court Arena - Get "Earl's Court Arena 2405 Evoluzione" See the video section below. AUD recordings also circulate, and were the first ones to be bootlegged.

MAT 1975.05.25 London, Earl's Court Arena - Get the bluecongo SBD/AUD matrix "King Jimmy" along with the SBD with AUD fills "When We Were Kings." See the video section below. AUD recordings circulate.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Infamous shows:

AUD 1971.07.05 Milan, Italy - One of the band's only shows in Italy ended prematurely due to riot.

AUD 1973.07.18 Vancouver - Show ended after Stairway to Heaven when Plant suffers a meltdown due to some drug use.

AUD 1977.04.09 Chicago - Show cut short when Page nearly collapses from "exhaustion." AUD-shot video of the show circulates. The show the next night is much better.

AUD 1977.06.03 Tampa - Good open air stadium show cut short by torrential rain; not rescheduled due to subsequent riot.

AUD 1977.07.21 Tempe - Reputedly their worst ever performance, captured in part on tape. Part of the disaster is a tape recorded too fast, so it played way too slow. Get the speed corrected 2nd gen source.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Mike "The Mike" Millard

It is worthwhile to get all of the Mike Millard recordings. For more information about why his recordings are worth getting, go here: http://www.uuweb.led-zeppelin.us/tapers.htm. His recordings are typically incomplete but the best versions of these shows fill the gaps with alternate sources. He recorded the following shows, several of which are in the lists above:

AUD 1975.03.11 Long Beach - Whole Lotta Love is followed by one of the most complete performances of The Crunge--with lyrics. Get the Winston Remaster, version 2.

AUD 1975.03.12 Long Beach - Only the last few songs of the show. The Winston Remaster uses a non-Millard source for the rest of the show.

AUD 1975.03.24 Inglewood, LA Forum

AUD 1975.03.25 Inglewood, LA Forum

AUD 1975.03.27 Inglewood, LA Forum - Linda Lovelace introduces the band. Longest known Dazed and Confused. All three LA shows from 1975 are available as "Deep Throat I-III," though this last night also circulates as low gen.

AUD 1977.06.19 San Diego Sports Coliseum

AUD 1977.06.21 Inglewood, LA Forum - The most revered of Mike Millard's recordings, both for its outstanding sound quality, and for the band's great performance overall. Get the Winston Remaster. See the Must-Haves list above and the classic bootlegs section below.

AUD 1977.06.23 Inglewood, LA Forum - The first of Millard's recordings to be bootlegged. Another high quality recording of this show also circulates widely. Keith Moon makes an appearance in Over the Top and the Whole Lotta Love/Rock and Roll encore. See the classic bootlegs section below.

AUD 1977.06.25 Inglewood, LA Forum - Regarded by some as better than 1977.06.21; regarded by others as one of the worst of this LA run. A low gen source is now available as an alternative to the many bootleg releases, of which "Delerium Treatment" is probably the best.

AUD 1977.06.27 Inglewood, LA Forum - Get the Master>VHS>DAT version. See the Honorable Mentions list above.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Videos:
"Led Zeppelin DVD" offers outstanding quality versions of items that circulated as bootlegs. The selections from the Earl's Court and Knebworth shows on the official DVD may just whet your appetite for more complete live video. Some high quality video recordings circulate widely. All are available on DVD. These are the most notable:

VID 1975.05.24 London, Earl's Court - EV Heavy Metal Kids disks 1 and 2 are the most complete version of this show. The cuts are filled with AUD sourced audio and video slide shows. This is the first release to include Moby Dick. The band does a great version of Whole Lotta Love/Sex Machine/Black Dog as an encore. Disk 3 is the first quarter of the 1975.05.25 video.

VID 1977.07.17 Seattle - Not a very good performance, and the audio is rather flat. But, video of the entire show is readily available. Get the Cosmic Energy 2 DVD set. Hopefully someone will open up the SBD audio with some mixing with the AUD for a matrix soundtrack.

VID 1979.08.04 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - Video clips from this show have been circulating for several years, but now a complete video is is available from Watchtower on DVD. This is by far the better of the two Knebworth shows. The video quality is roughly comparable to 1975.05.24. It won't be long before the Watchtower video source is married to the WR MAT audio noted above in the main list. When the video with the MAT audio circulates, that should become the standard version of the video for the foreseeable future.

VID 1979.08.11 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - The lesser of the two Knebworth performances, but video of the entire show is readily available. Get the "no label" 3 DVD set for the highest quality video (though a part of Black Mountain Side and Kashmir repeats on the original version of the second disk), or the GM 2 DVD set, Return of the Dinosaurs (the video is compressed ever so slightly relative to the 3 DVD set, but the repeated sections have been trimmed out).

--------------------------------------------------------------

Classic Bootlegs:

If you are interested in rebuilding your collection of classic bootlegs one obstacle sure to set you back is that some of the names and dates of your favorites have changed, and others can be found on many different releases of widely different quality. Below is a list to help you get started. I've identified the source and correct date for the classic bootleg whose title is listed in boldface. Most of these bootlegs have been reissued with other titles and attributed to other dates and places. I tried to list the earliest or most widely circulating bootleg source. For most of these bootlegs better sources are now circulating. I offer my advice on which source is best. In general, check Bootledz.com http://www.bootledz.com/comparisons.htm for comparisons of bootleg releases, and Underground Uprising http://uuweb.led-zeppelin.us/ for reviews of bootlegs.

AUD 1968.12.30 Spokane - Alpha - ...of "Alpha and Omega." Falsely attributed to Denver 1968. The ZD or Empress Valley releases are good.

AUD 1969.01.10 San Francisco, Fillmore West - For Your Love - Includes the Yardbirds classic performed as an encore. Get the 2nd Gen source.

SBD 1969.03.16 Copenhagen, Denmark - Led Zeppelin K&S - Released numerous times. Mostly attributed to other dates and places, often Stockholm, and often 1968. A more complete AUD recording circulates. The SBD is available in Master > DAT and the AUD is available in 1st Gen > DAT.

AUD 1969.04.26 San Francisco, Winterland Ballroom - Winterland - Earliest version of Whole Lotta Love; great show. Get Dadgad's speed corrected version.

SBD 1969.04.27 San Francisco, Fillmore West - Fillmore West 1969/Moby Dick - Gaps in the SBD are filled by the AUD recording in the more recent releases noted above. One of their best ever shows.

SBD 1969.06.27 London - In the Light - Many classic bootlegs of this recording from the Playhouse Theater circulate to be enumerated here; "In the Light" was one of the best. I'm not sure which version of this show is the best one to get.

AUD 1969.10.12 London, Lyceum - LedZep Live at the Lyceum in London - First live performances of Heartbreaker and What Is and What Should Never Be. Get the 1st Gen > DAT source.

AUD 1970.03.11 Hamburg - White Summer - Originally a rare Japanese bootleg, then released in America and Canada on RSR/International. Get the ZD version of the 1st gen. source.

SBD 1970.03.21 Vancouver - Pb/Mudslide - This is the first Zep bootleg ever; probably pressed in Spring or Summer of '70. Communication Breakdown includes lyrics from Ramble On. The pitch corrected version follows the original track order, rearranged from the order of performance. If you want a version that sounds more like the familiar vinyl, get the Tarantura 2000 release.

AUD 1970.09.04 Inglewood, LA Forum - Live on Blueberry Hill - Several different recordings of this show circulate. The most famous version of this show is the second Zep bootleg, and the first one released by the folks behind Trade Mark of Quality--released before Zep III. Rubber Dubber released another recording shortly thereafter. Several more sources have appeared more recently. See http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm for information about different bootlegs of this most esteemed bootleg. The Sanctuary release is a good mix of sources presenting a complete version of the show. The GM DVD offers the complete mono TMoQ source. The Rubber Dubber source circulates in a supposedly 2nd gen source. The encores include a nearly complete Good Times Bad Times in a nice Communication Breakdown medley, and one of the two recorded performances of a complete version of Out on the Tiles, along with Blueberry Hill.

SBD 1971.04.01 London - BBC Broadcast - Far too many versions of this recording from the Paris Theater circulate to be enumerated here. "BBC Broadcast" was the TMoQ release. Get the version sourced from the Pre-FM Masters.

AUD 1971.09.14 Berkeley - Going to California - Another TMoQ classic. The original tapes were destroyed, so all digital copies are from the vinyl, which is not a complete recording of the show. A complete recording of the previous night in Berkeley is available. Get the ZD release.

AUD 1971.09.29 Osaka, Festival Hall - Cellarful of Noise/Live in Japan 1971 - Includes lines from Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and the only known performance of Friends. Many recordings of this show circulate, and several bootlegs combine them in various ways to reconstruct the complete show. See http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm for information about different bootlegs of this great show.

AUD 1972.10.03 Tokyo, Budokan Hall - Live at the Budokan - Get "Explosion" released by Flagge. See the Japanese tour list above.

AUD 1972.10.09 Osaka, Festival Hall - My Brain Hurts - Encores include Stand By Me. Get the Master > DAT source. See the Japanese tour list above.

AUD 1973.03.24 Offenburg, Germany - Custard Pie - Get the 2nd gen. source. See the Europe 1973 tour list above.

AUD 1973.05.31 Inglewood, LA Forum - Bonzo's Birthday Party - Another TMoQ classic. Plant leads the audience to a rendition of Happy Birthday for Bonham. An incomplete SBD also circulates. Get the TDOLZ or Sanctuary releases. An incomplete SBD circulates.

AUD 1973.06.02 San Francisco - Persistence - Get the pitch corrected version. An incomplete SBD circulates.

AUD 1973.06.03 Inglewood, LA Forum - Three Days After - Another TMoQ classic rereleased on many other labels. The original vinyl consisted of the latter portion of the show from Stairway to Heaven through the encores, with That's the Way and Bron-Y-Aur from 1970.09.04 inserted on Side One. The recording of the show prior to Stairway to Heaven is unfortunately marred by serious problems with the tape. SIRA cuts out the worst problems, but also uses noise reduction on the rest of the recording. Cobra offers more of the wrecked tape. For an exercise in frustration, get the Cobra version and hope that another recording of this great show materializes soon.

AUD 1973.07.17 Seattle - V-1/2, Performed Live in Seattle - Another TMoQ classic. An incomplete SBD also circulates. Get the Winson Remaster which includes a matrix of the SBD and AUD sources.

AUD 1975.01.20 Chicago - Live at the Chicago Stadium, Live on the Levee - The other source for WTLB, and one of four sources for The Wanton Song. The 1975.01.20 Chicago show has until very recently been universally misidentified as the 21st. Get Dadgad's remaster.

AUD 1975.02.07 New York City, Madison Square Garden - Trampled Underfoot - The vinyl was not a very good recording, but most of the Cobra version is sourced from a higher quality tape whose tapers comment on the show while regularly sparking up joints. The latter third of the Cobra version is sourced from the vinyl.

AUD 1975.02.12 New York City, Madison Square Garden - In Concert/In Person - This outstanding AUD recording is now accompanied by a SBD, both of which are combined into an incredible sounding matrix by bluecongo. The original bootlegs were sourced from the AUD recording. See the must-haves list above.

AUD 1975.05.18 London, Earl's Court - No Quarter - Empress Valley assembled a version of this show allegedly using the acetates for the original vinyl. Many versions of this show currently circulate. See http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm to sort some of them out, then just get "Demand Unprecedented II." See the Earl's Court section above.

AUD 1975.05.24 London, Earl's Court - Earliest bootlegs of this show--too many to enumerate--were of AUD recordings. The band offer an awesome encore of Whole Lotta Love/Sex Machine/Black Dog. A nearly complete video is readily available; see the video section. See http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm to sort out the many releases of the AUD and SBD of this show. For the AUD recording, get "Fourthcoming." For the SBD get "Evoluzione." A matrix of both sources is now circulating. See the Earl's Court section above.

SBD 1977.04.27 Cleveland - Destroyer - The first 1977 SBD to circulate. An early 4 LP version was packaged in a large plastic case. Get the Master > DAT source.

AUD 1977.06.21 Inglewood, LA Forum - Listen to this Eddie - The deservedly most famous Mike Millard recording. Get the Winston Remaster. See the must-haves list and Mike "The Mike" Millard section above.

AUD 1977.06.23 Inglewood, LA Forum - For Badgeholders Only - With Keith Moon, and another Mike Millard recording--first one to be bootlegged. Page's guitar breaks down in Trampled Underfoot and the band destroys Kashmir. See http://bootledz.com/comparisons.htm to sort out the different releases of this show. Get ZD or Tarantura 2000 versions of this show. See the Mike "The Mike" Millard section above.

AUD 1977.07.24 Oakland - Omega - ...of "Alpha and Omega." Last US show, and overall not a good performance. Get either Dadgad's 1st Gen source or "Push Push." See the first and last sections above.

AUD 1979.07.23 Copenhagen, Denmark - Melancholy Danish Pageboys Get it On - Very good AUD recording of their first performance in two years. Get the Master>DAT version.

AUD 1979.07.24 Copenhagen, Denmark - Copenhagen Warm Ups: The Second Night - Very good AUD recording of a performance that many prefer to the first night at Knebworth. Get the Master>DAT version. See the honorable mentions section above.

AUD 1979.08.04 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - There are far too many classic bootlegs of both Knebworth shows to be enumerated here, though most were of the first, and better performance. All of the old vinyl releases were sourced from a few different AUD recordings, and none sounded terribly good. The complete SBD recordings now available are vastly superior to any of these AUD recordings, and now Winston Remaster has made a SBD/AUD matrix of the first show that sounds fantastic. The Watchtower releases of the SBDs of both shows are also worth getting. See the entry for this show in the main list above, and see the video section.

AUD 1979.08.11 Stevenage, Knebworth Festival - The status of classic bootlegs of the second Knebworth show is similar as for the first. A few bootlegs of the first night included a few tracks from the second night. See the video section above.

AUD 1980.06.29 Zurich, Switzerland - Swiss Made - The classic bootlegs of the 1980 tour were all sourced from AUD recordings. SBD recordings of nearly every 1980 show are now readily available. Bluecongo's matrix of the SBD and AUD recordings of this show sounds great; get it. For the SBD, get "Conquer Europe." For the AUD, get TDOLZ's "Swiss Made." See the must-haves list above.

AUD 1980.07.07 Berlin, Germany - Bonzo's Last Ever Gig - The title says it all. For the AUD, get that portion of EV's "Eternal Magic." For the SBD, get SIRA.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Moving On:
So you've had a taste of live Led Zeppelin and now you want more. Where do you go from here? To get a good sense of what shows are available, consult the complete list of known shows and recordings in The Rover forum http://www.royal-orleans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6084. Other such lists can be found on other Led Zeppelin web sites. Google is helpful for finding them. The list here has the benefit of open consultation and correction by a large community of dedicated fans seriously concerned with accuracy. That list indicates which shows have known, circulating recordings, and whether such recordings are from the soundboard, from the audience, or on video. A significant number of those recordings are incomplete, or of rather compromised quality. When you get used to the shows I've noted on this list of recommendations, you should find that you can grow to appreciate even rather marginal quality fragments on occasion. But on the bright side, over half of the known performances of Led Zeppelin have recordings circulating, and a couple more enter the pool each year. Once you find a show that interests you, search around for more information here, at Bootledz.com, at Underground Uprising, or using Google. Someone has it and will trade, torrent, or arrange for some way to get it to you--just be ready to do the same for others.

This list of recommendations has a few notable gaps that any serious LZ collector would try to fill:
There are many great performances in the various '69 tours, though many recordings from this period are fragmented and of somewhat low fidelity. All the shows from Toronto and New York are definitely worth having.

From the fall '71 UK tour, try AUD 1971.11.16 Ipswich for another source of Gallows Pole.

From the Feb. '72 tour down under, try AUD 1972.02.27 Sydney or AUD 1972.02.25 Aukland.

From the fall '72 through winter '73 UK tour start with SBD 1973.01.15 Stoke.

From the early part of the '73 US tour, try any of the readily available SBDs, especially 1973.05.14 New Orleans (one of the three most complete SBDs from the '73 US tour) and 1973.05.13 Mobile (unfortunately still incomplete). The '73 SBDs are notoriously flat, though, and few are more than 2/3 complete. The individual Madison Square Garden shows are each better than what the band offered us in "The Song Remains the Same;" get the Garden Tapes vols. 1-3 which fill gaps in SBDs with AUD recordings. Another great 1973 US Tour show is AUD 1973.07.21 Providence.

Many nearly complete AUD recordings from the '75 tour are now readily available. Of the ones not covered in the lists above,

AUD 1975.02.28 Baton Rouge is worth having.
Of the many nearly complete '77 recordings available, the newly released SBD 1977.05.21 Houston is worth having. The Madison Square Garden shows are also worth getting, especially AUD 1977.06.11 and AUD 1977.06.13.

And, if you've enjoyed any of the shows I've recommended, try some of the others from the same tours. You'll find that even when the set list seems similar, the band shakes up the way they play the songs, and the medleys in As Long as I Have You, How Many More Time, Whole Lotta Love and even Communication Breakdown, as well as the extended jams in Dazed and Confused and No Quarter, will always keep you guessing.
