Here are my favorites:
PC
---
For learning Japanese, I love a program called Stackz on my PC (www.stackz.com). It is a flashcard program that has a built in dictionary that uses Jim Breene's edict. When you look up a word, you can automatically add it to a flashcard stack. It also can watch your clipboard, which makes reading things online easy because as soon as you hit copy it automatically looks up the word.
I also have a tablet PC with Japanese writing support, which means that I can input Kanji/kana using a pen. Great for looking things up in dictionaries when I don't know how to pronounce them (can also do this with my pocket pc -- see below).

For learning kanji, I am using "Kanji In Context" by Tokyo Times. I find it very useful to learn kanji in example sentences.

The Aots Nihongo Dictionary for Practical Use (although it is Romaji, it has the best example sentences and contains just about every common word I know).
Videos

I have tons of Japanese videos. Manga aren't really that great for learning Japanese you can actually use. However, a lot of movies for kids are enjoyable and can help you learn. I really like Disney movies in Japanese since I already know what they are saying in English (having seen them all before). I get a feel for how one might say the same things in Japanese. I also like Doraemon since it is pretty down to earth and simple (I bought all the TV episodes on DVD from Ebay). Gibli studio movies are excellent. I like Crayon Shinchan, too. I do watch some Dramas, TV shows, and regular movies. Water Boys is good. The TV show I like is Ainori. You can download some great TV stuff from D-addicts (www.d-addicts.com).

Last, but not least, a Pocket PC that has been Japanese-ized. There is a way to turn any pocket PC running 2003 into a Japanese Pocket PC.
I have the Ectaco Partner Japanese<->English dictionary.
I have something called Decuma Japanese which is a writting recognition program that does a fantastic job figuring out what kanji I am writing (great for looking up words in books that I have no idea how to pronounce since I can just copy them down and look them up). I also have Stackz for pocket pc so that I can practice on the run with my flashcards. http://

D-addicts is great for learning Japanese. I have downloaded a lot of shows with English subtitles. My favorite is "Densha Otoko". I just started watching "Tokyo Wankei". Anime with subtitles is also good for learning. I dowload that from http://animesuki.com/ and http://boxtorrents.com/browse.php
Private tutoring is also good, especially when the lessons are free and the teacher is beautiful!
For more conventional education, I recommend Kodansha's Dictionary of Japanese Particles. Particles are essential to Japanese but are difficult for foreigners to learn. That book helps a lot in clarifying usage.

I listen to NHK’s English radio conversation programs I recorded on MD everyday.
I most want to improve my listening ability, so I practice listening to the conversations
in those programs without textbooks. There are some on-line English-English
dictionaries that are available for free. I use some of them when I check words
I’m not familiar with. I want to practice speaking English, but don’t have many
opportunities to speak it in my daily life. So, I sometimes go to English
chat room when I have time, mostly midnight. I haven’t been there recently.

They were really nice places to talk nothing special in English tho. I dun go there much lately coz I once went there and felt sick an tired. I was disapointed those people who talk rude in a chat room. That's why I gave up to go there.

Oh, you use Skype, 酢七面鳥. I once downloaded the software for it, but I didn’t really understand how to use it. I wanted to use it for a group discussion, but I couldn’t find where to go to have a conversation with more than two people at the same time. I heard the voice through Skype is clearer than that of Yahoo

So, I sometimes made my own chat room with some topics about social issues.
But the topics were a little bit too serious, for example; female emperor in Japan, euthanasia, the decline of birth rate in Japan and so on. So, it’s difficult for me to make
the discussion interesting. Still, it was fun to talk with a lot of people in English.

I honestly have never had a problem with Skype crashing. Maybe it has gotten better since you used it... Ebay, a very successful auction site in the US, is backing it, so I'm sure that they've worked out most of the bugs. It should be fairly easy to figure out how to use it now since they have localization in many languages, including Japanese. You should give it another try.
いつも英語で書いていますけど、日本語でたまに書いたほうがいいですかな。英語で書くほうが早いから、英語で書いてしまうのですが、日本語で書くのを練習しないといけません。
