Subject: Memorial Service for Gloria Evans

When our dear friend and colleague, Gloria Carey Evans, passed away on Dec. 25, 2008, the College lost a beloved member of the community and a trusted advocate who provided wise and thoughtful counsel to generations of Swarthmore students, staff and faculty. She was 81.

At the celebration of Gloria’s awe-inspiring 50 years at the College last year, I had the humbling honor of speaking about her, and mentioned some of the extraordinary qualities ― “brilliant attentiveness,” “keen intelligence,” “grace,” “wit,” and “wisdom” ― that cascade from the mouths of her friends and colleagues when given even the slightest provocation to speak about her. She was a remarkable person who carried herself with quiet dignity and humility, and her presence enriched the lives of those who knew her.

Born in Ames, Iowa, Gloria’s family moved to Bellingham, Washington, when she was 10 years old. She graduated from Western Washington University, earned an M.S. from the University of Washington, and received her Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University.

After teaching at Centralia Junior College in Washington, her undergraduate alma mater, and the University of Nebraska, Gloria came to Swarthmore as an assistant professor of psychology, filling in as a leave replacement for renowned psychologist Solomon Asch. After teaching for three years, Gloria applied her research talents in testing and guidance to shape and develop the role of adviser for foreign students, scholars, and visitors. She quickly became known for taking a deeply personal interest in each person, giving each her careful attention and enabling them to thrive with her support. I will always remember the artful way that she extended her web of caring to the parents of our international students, making it possible for some of them to be present to see their children graduate when multiple bureaucracies seemed determined to block that possibility.

At Swarthmore, she also met her future husband, Philip Keller Evans ’48. A scholars program in his name, for which she served as an adviser, has encouraged students to develop themselves as critical thinkers, compassionate citizens, and engaged participants in local and world affairs since its founding in 1986.

Gloria’s survivors include daughter Allison Bronwen Evans, son-in-law Michael Angelo Dignazio, and grandchildren Grace Carey Dignazio, Claire Allison Dignazio, and Michael Philip Dignazio, all of Greenville, Del. She was also particularly close with six nieces, Anne Ford of Middletown, N.J., Mary Alice Stewart of Wilsonville, Ore., and Marianne Evans, Catherine Evans, Cynthia Evans, and Barbara Evans Berro of N.C., as well as all of their children. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Orva Carey and nephew Roger Carey, both of Silvis, Ill., and nephews John Dilworth Jr., of Corvallis, Ore., and H. Walter Evans III of Eatontown, N.J.

In addition to her work at the College, Gloria enjoyed running an antique business, playing piano with her granddaughters, attending Quaker Meeting, and sharing her good cheer with her dear family and friends. Her colleagues in the Deans Office and throughout the College join me in expressing our heartfelt appreciation for Gloria’s contributions to this community that she held so dear.
A memorial service will be held in the manner of Friends at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Swarthmore Friends Meeting House on the Swarthmore campus at 12 Whittier

Place. At her family’s request, memorial donations may be made to the Swarthmore Friends Meeting at the address above, or to Swarthmore College, c/o Gift Records,

500 College Ave., Swarthmore, Pa., 19081.
