Is your second language Japanese? Do you use Facebook or mixi, and interact in Japanese?
My name is Hajime Kataoka, and I am a graduate student of the department of pacific and Asian studies at the University of Victoria, and I am studying L2 Japanese speakers’ interaction on SNS.
I would like to invite you to participate in a study entitled “L2 Japanese Speakers’ Use of Japanese on SNS and Construction of Identity”.
The purpose of this research project is to examine L2 Japanese speakers’ use of social networking services, and how the Japanese language is used by Japanese learners to project their identities. Multilingual writing practice on the internet has been gaining attention in sociolinguistic studies, and various scholars have been examining writing practices in second language on the internet. However, most of the studies primarily focused on English as second language. Furthermore, few if any studies examined use of language such as Japanese as second language on the social networking services. Therefore, the present study seeks to extend existing sociolinguistic studies of this kind.
In this study, I will examine participants’ activities on Facebook and/or mixi for a certain period of time, and then conduct brief interviews (participation in the interview is not mandatory). All you have to do is to add the researcher’s account as a ‘friend’ use Facebook and/or mixi as you always do, and then spare 30-45 minutes for an interview. This study refers to participants in this category as group 1 participants. If you have both mixi and Facebook account, you could either participate in this research through both mixi and Facebook or either one of them.
The aim and intent of this study is not to establish a genuine friendship with you. Very importantly, in this study, your anonymity will be kept in the dissemination of the results by using pseudonyms and replacing identifying information that could allow a third party to trace you.
The project is scheduled to run on September 18 to October 20.

Because their comments will be valuable data to this project as well, I would like to recruit those people as participants as well. This study refers to them as group 2 participants. All they have to do is to let me examine their comments on your updates and posts on your timeline. I will be recruiting group 2 participants throughout the course of this study.
