Shortly can be used like すぐ to describe when something is going to happen. It's similiar to "soon".
*I will arrive shortly <=> I will arrive soon.
*I'll be leaving shortly <=> I'll be leaving soon.
However, briefly describes the duration of an event, but does not describe when that event occurs.
*I'm going to speak briefly at the conference <=> I'm going to speak for a short period of time at the conference.
*I'm going to stop briefly at the grocery store <=> I'm going to stop for a short time at the grocery store.
I wanted to comment on effect & affect. I see people use these incorrectly all the time so I would expect it to be difficult for someone learning English.
"Effect" is a noun that represents the result of some action. We talk about the "effects" of an event.
"Cause and effect" is a common phrase. The cause is the event that results in the effect.
*Some scientists study the effect of cow flatulence on the ozone layer.
*What will be the effect of global warming?
*Will there be an effect on the economy?
"Affect" is a verb that means something causes something to happen.
*Will that affect the economy?
*How does that affect gas prices?
